I try to take pictures of my husband with our children or sometimes just my husband alone and he always feels to need to make some stupid face or duck behind one of the kids or otherwise run..

It's frustrating, because I'd like a few GOOD pictures of him with the kids for when they're older and want to look back- I'm sure Daddy with his eyes crossed isn't going to be a tremendously fuzzy memory for them..

He probably feels self-conscious. Just be straight forward. Tell him that he's a big boy now and that he's supposed to look more mature than the children. Tell him the children would like to see photos of a daddy not a clown. Of course be as tactful and diplomatic as possible without hurting his feelings but if that's what it takes then perhaps that's what it will take.

Telephoto lens at a greater distance. The farther away you stand from the subject when you take the shot, the less the subject is aware of when the shutter is triggered.

I like "Dr. Sam's" answer, as well.

If you don't have a, separate, long telephoto, then set your digital camera's magnification to the highest OPTICAL zoom it has, and step back as far as you need to capture the image you want. Please remember, that you don't have to take a picture of the entire body to get a good picture. The most interesting parts of people images are, usually, the faces. A good close up of a face or two will tell a much more intimate story than many full body shots.

Sometimes, you just have to hold the camera up and wait for the subject to be distracted from the camera.

Note to "Dr. Sam": Did you see my answer about a dentist's creativity? Just kidding. Really! Just ... just... stay away from me with that drill. STAY AWAY!

He can only 'make a face' when he is aware that his picture is being taken. This is great for candid shots but you want a more formal picture. But you can still catch him before he has time to mug it up. When you take a picture, say ready on the count of three. He will wait until the last moment to spoil your picture. So count slowly like this, onnnnnnneee pause twooo and snap the picture before the count of three. He won't have a chance to spoil your shot.

He's really robbing his kids of the precious memory of their father. Not now, but in future years.
Explain that to him and see if he won't change his tune, if only for the sake of his children.
On the other hand, he might need an ego boost. Sometimes people do this when they have a low self esteem of themselves, rather then when they are just goofing around.

Try to take pictures of him when he doesn't know your taking a picture. like chasing your children in the park, sitting on the beach helping one make a sandcastle, etc. If you've got the money, go and get a family picture taken professionally

Hope I Helped :)

My ex was like this... he died, and there are only 2 pictures of him with our daughter, when she was 2 yrs old, that I snuck taking. She was 16, when he died! I've learned since then.

Let him make his funny faces, then snap a second pic quickly, when he's laughing at getting the better of you. Sometimes they're better, because they are truly natural.

Put your camera in "Continuous Shooting" mode and hold the button down for a few frames. Once he thinks you are done with your shot, he might lighten up and you will get a decent candid shot.
