many seem to make out that they are big care bears (which is good to a degree) but my one is very defensive when it comes to people it does not know, this seems to only happen at night time, during the day he is fine with anyone.

is this normal.

both mine are very protective of the house.
if they hear something outside, day or night, they let everyone know there is "something" out there.
if someone is brought in by me the only thing the visitor has to worry about is being sniffed for the first 5 min. then they want to give them"kisses".
some people don't mind but others have been put off by it.
trying to break them from being so lovey.

Burglar alarms and locks are better.

Your dog needs to go to training if he's funny around strangers. Obviously he's not been socialised properly, which is a problem.

If someone really wants to break in, they'll just shoot the dog or beat it. A dog is supposed to be a pet not a guard. I feel sorry for the next door neighbour's dog.

The appearence of the breed might put off some people, as they resemble the pit bull, but if you want a dog that will be loyal to you and protective, German Shepheards and Rottwielers ore the best bet.

Surely not the best "guard" dogs. Many morons try training them for this purpose though, and that can be a total disaster.

if you want a dog to gaurd your property get a Bull mastiff, they are cute 100% loyal and bundles of love, but i considr Staffordshire bull terriors to be little yappy things! no offense!

He has probably picked up on your nervousness when it is dark and that you are comfortable with visitors during the day.
