among the collateral likely benefits of a stemcell research project will be the capacity to build a 'reaper' virus: a virus which will fix on a specific genome marker and infect (and kill) only people carrying this dna segment. a reaper virus targeted at dna more common among americans (or among white americans, or even among americans of germanic origin) could decimate america's population, while leaving the country which released it untouched.

for the first time in recent history the rest of the world has access to a devastating weapon technology which the usa has decided to ignore.

or has it? can anyone think of a virus of recent origin which targets one social group at the expense of others?

Nobody has created a bloody reaper virus. But it's a good illustration of how religious blocking of technology could be horrible for our nation's defense.
That sort of genetically engineered virus is at least 300 years science fiction, presently. It would take a very sophisticated control of life, as well as the ability to manufacture new bits of code for DNA (Like Guanine etc.) to begin to pull it off.

(you sound paranoid. There is no such virus, and gene sequences are so long that even different ones have almost identical acid-base sequences, as those things tend to be conserved not only between humans, but even between humans and animals).
