I'm a struggling writer, and as much as I want to pursue my career, I get all these discouraging feedback that most writer's and authors end up being bankrupt or penniless. But I think that would also depend on how good your work is...
what do you think?

Only a small percentage comes into lots of money, I hear, and most make a pretty decent living if they write one or 2 good ones.

Authors earn lots of money if their work sells a lot of copies so yes, if the work is really good you can earn good money from it. It also has to become popular though. it could be a great book but if it is not marketed in the right way then nobody will know it's good to be able to go out and buy it!

You have to be prepared to wait for the revenue too, JK Rowling did not become rich from the first Harry Potter book!

Many did not quit their day job at first. Some even took up to writing books for Harlequin for a bit of cash on the side ($5,000 per book) and they accept beginners. Many publishers don't accept straight submissions from beginners but rather from agents. Unfortunately many agents also want you to have published one book first which is why some find other ways to get published first.
If you know you are good then stick with it. It is better to do something that you love than be miserable in a factory somewhere.
