I've read the same thing before --- it also gives the pet a calming affect ---- it lowers both the dog and the person's heart rate.

The emotion of loving and caring and just slowing down from everyday life slows the heart rate, and thus lowers blood pressure.

Its fact that when you care for a pet there are health benefits.

It does to most - really this is a psychology question - it works because we are very tactile (touchy feely) and we many ignore this. Therefore - for most pets are the only physical contact.
