My advice to you would be to start with beer. No cheap larger like Budweiser. Good old English ale (e.g London pride, serve warm) or if you are too far away e.g the U.S I believe you guys import alot of Newcastle brown ale, serve chilled.

If you think you would prefer a cold larger (or wish to try both) I would say go for German larger, e.g Pils.
This site http://www.germanbeerguide.co.uk/sitemap.html may well help you with German/English beer.

OK, If you choose wine or would like to try wine. I would say to start with a red, ask at the off-lisence. Or supermarket, They should have a wine expert handy. Though don't buy cheap wine.

I really don't advise drinking spirits. Spirits/wine/and cider can give a nasty hangover the next morning. Which leads me on to binge drinking, don't do it.

The strength of an alcoholic drink depends upon how much pure alcohol, or ethanol, it contains. Cans or bottles will show the strength as the percentage alcohol by volume or %ABV. The higher the number, the stronger the drink.

What's a unit?

A UK unit is 10ml or 8 grams of pure alcohol. The number of units in a drink depends on what you're drinking.

Half a pint of 3.5% beer/lager/cider is one unit

BUT many continental lagers are closer to 5% while extra strong lagers can be as strong as 9%!

How alcohol works

One small (125 ml) glass of wine at 9% is one unit
BUT who uses small glasses? Certainly not pubs and probably not at home either. Plus most wines are now about 11-13%.
A 25ml pub measure of spirit at 40% is one unit.

Female

0-5 units

The equivalent of a glass of wine after work - this is a relatively safe level to drink. However even low levels of alcohol intake have been linked to breast cancer.

5-10 units

You are heading towards the upper limit for women. Make sure that you have at least one clear alcohol free day during the week.

10-15 units

14 units per week is the medically recommended alcohol level for women. Try and cut back on your alcohol intake say by having mineral water rather than wine with a meal.

15+ units This is over the medically recommended alcohol level for women. You should consider cutting back your alcohol intake by looking back over each week and judging your drinking habits. Is it two glasses of wine after work - or a Friday night binge? Cut it down.

Male

0-5 units

This is a relatively safe level of alcohol to drink per week.

5-10 units 10 units per week is roughly the equivalent of a pint a day after work. If you can keep your alcohol intake at this level, then this is relatively safe.

10-15 units This level of drinking is still under the medically recommended limit of 21 units of alcohol per week for men. However, make sure that you have at least one clear alcohol free day per week.

15-20 units Still within the recommended limits for men - but only just. You should consider cutting back your alcohol intake by looking back over each week and judging your drinking habits?

20+ 21 units per week is the recommended alcohol intake for men. If you are approaching, at or above this level - it's time to think about cutting down
