what herbs or vitamins are good for colon cleansing?
I see ads on TV for cleansing but I can't seem to think they are a scam. Are there vitamins or herbs that can help with chronic constipation or cleaning the colon?

Try a spoonful of psyllium, flax seeds and slippery elm in a glass of liquid before you go to bed.

Try drinking more water and exercise.

The scam here is the whole concept of colon cleansing. I've listened to the ads on the radio. Comparing the colon with galvanized pipes that over time, become coated with waste is absolute nonsense. People who get on board with this idea risk permanent damage to their colon and place their overall health in jepardy.

The best way to combat chronic constipation is to eat more bulk in the form of whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, and making sure that the body is well hydrated. Whole grain cereal, especially when served cooked, is a great way to promote natural elimination, and provides nutritional benefits as well. Exercise is also crucial.

Americans tend to consume so little bulk that colon diseases, such as diverticulosis, are seen in this country more than any other population on the planet. Using herbs or vitamins for bowel stimulation is not a good solution. If changing your diet is not resulting in good elimination, check with your doctor.

If you take the colon cleansing nonsense seriously, ask your doctor about it to learn about the risks. If you are approaching 50 years of age or have a history of colon cancer or colon polyps in your family, get in for your colonoscopy sooner.
