If the injury is only new, then maybe the best idea is for her to rest as much as she can. There would be swelling around the injury, so maybe the swelling needs to go down first before she starts any kind of exercise. She really need to be referred to an professional who knows what the correct exercises should be for your mother. The insurance company should pay for this. Just be careful what exercise doctors tell you to do, because they are not really experts. An orthapedic surgeon is the person who should be handling your mother's problem. If she is getting no relief, then she needs to find a doctor who is going to really listen to her problem. Has she tried different pain killers. Panadeine Forte is sometimes prescribed for bad pain, but for some people it doesnt work. That was what I was prescribed and it did nothing for me. I kept on complaining to my doctor telling him that I need relief from the pain and he eventually put me on something stronger.....and it helped. Dont allow the doctors to dictate the level of your mother's pain. She has to be persistent and dont underplay the pain she is in. She is in agony and she needs someone to give her pain relief that works. Just keep on persisting until you find a doctor who will be sympathetic to your molthers pain.

Not sure what you mean by 3 slipped discs? No such thing as a slipped disc? It might be bulging discs? Then you need to know what area the bulge is and if it is hitting the nerve roots? I have a prolapsed disc and acute onset extreme pain cuts everything to my legs. However I went to Pilate's, with a qualified instructor who knew about the Disc and was able to teach me what exercises I could do and what I should avoid. Add in posture, things like sitting, driving, sleeping, walking and life got better. Please do not just look at Pilate's exercises on the Internet but find a PT who knows about Disc problems. Without knowing the specific 'slipped disc' information it is hard to help.

find a book called Peak Performance Fitness by Jennifer Rhodes- it has a great section on how to train the correct muscles that support your back.

-EDIT-
not sure why somebody would give me a thumbs down for suggesting a book?? Has this person read it and tried the exercises? Maybe they were put off by the title? The second part of the title is actually: "Maximize your fitness potential without injury or strain". It is not a book on hardcore training or bodybuilding, but more like how to tune you body correctly- these are simple exercises you do in your home- and there is an entire chapter on your back and abdominal area. This book was written by a professional physical therapist/trainer, and helped me immensely with my own chronic back problems. Taught me why my back kept 'going out' and what, exactly, to do about it.

Be as mild as you can with her. The exercises will eventually help, but for now it's gonna hurt. That much pain be very careful with her, no twisting at all.
