Yes to a certain Extent--Sr. advised Rick Hendrick to take a look at this Kid. Sr. often could be seen in the Pit Garages talking to Jeff and on Pit Row Wall siting there with Jeff. Dale would be using his 2 hands like he was showing Jeff how to draft or what line was best like Dale Srs. 2 hands were imitating 2 Cars on the track!!!!

ABSOLUTELY...... Why do you think Gordon has been so dominant? When asked if he (Gordon) would intentionally wreck Jimmy Johnson to win the Nextel Cup.."Then I asked Gordon what Earnhardt would do if he were in Gordon's shoes.
"I think about that every once in a while, how would Dale be influencing things happening in the sport today; how would he run on the track; how would he compete against some of the drivers that are out there today," Gordon said.
Earnhardt all but adopted Gordon early in his career, mentoring and teaching him not only how to be a good race car driver but also how to become a champion.
"While he taught me some lessons in '93 and '94 by putting the bumper to me several times, in '95 that rarely ever happened in competition," Gordon said of his first championship-winning season. "You knew when to stay away from him, and you knew when you had to race him hard. You knew he was going to lean on you, and you had to be ready for that."
But being like Earnhardt is not in his makeup, Gordon said. He would rather race Johnson cleanly and let him win fair and square than to push him out of the way or intentionally wreck him.
"You just can't do some of the things that you used to be able to do," Gordon said. "I don't even know if Dale would have been able to get away with some of those things today."
Surprisingly, Gordon thinks the Intimidator would support him if he races Johnson cleanly on Sunday.

Dale didn't so much intentionally mentor Gordon. Jeff had enough talent to occasionally hang w/ Sr. on the rack & emulated much of his style. Very true on the plate tracks.
God bless Dale.

That seems to be the story. It's interesting when you consider how different their styles were.
I even understand they were in on a business venture or two together.
