Jesus was speaking to some of the religious leaders of the day. They interpreted the scriptures in such a way as to believe that they were keeping the Law properly and thereby had gained favor with God. However they were hostile to Jesus, God's Son. They missed all the prophecies of scripture that He was fulfilling and dismissed all the signs and wonders He was performing. The prophecies spoke of the Messiah, the one in whom we gain eternal life.

This verse could not of been speaking of New Testament letters and prophetic writings because they had not been written yet. What this verse refers to is for us to look through the OT "scriptures"...these were the writings kept by the scribes documenting all the books from Moses to Daniel and so forth...all the OT writings. These books testify of Jesus being the Messiah. Isaiah, Psalmes, Daniel, Ezekiel and Hosea...all of them. In these books you will discover the mystery that Jesus Christ (Ya'Shuah Messiah) is Jehovah (Ya'hovah ~ I AM that I AM) the self existant God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob...."No man has seen the, Father...except me.." Every knee shall bow, every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord? Lord is the substitute word, meaning master...for the term Jehovah which is the name of God...Jesus Christ is Jehovah God. The Father and the Son are One sharing the same nature and the same Holy Spirit of Power. Every knee will bow and every tongue confess that Ya'shua Messiah is Jehovah...Jesus is GOD! Love in Christ, ~J~

Go on to read and verse 40 will explain more. But hes saying just because you know the scriptures real well in the bible doesnt mean you have eternal life. They missed the point and failed to have faith and just Believe in Gods Son. Just because someone has knowledge doesnt mean they are smart. "Love abounds more than knowledge" Mark. Also 1 John 4:7-8 " Brothers let us love one another for love is from God and everyone that loveth is born of God and Knoweth God. He that loveth not knoweth not God for God is love"

The scribes thought in the scriptures it spoke about eternal life, yet the scriptures talk about Jesus, but they are not willing to believe he is who he is.
