Weird question, but I am curious. I noticed at the Methodist church everyone stood up while singing, while at the LDS ward they all sat down. I prefer to sit while investigating a church, because honestly I don't know the words and my voice is horrible. While everyone was singing I was just moving my mouth and trying to form the words as everyone else was.. ;p It was weird. When I am sitting, I just kind of look at the book and read what the words say on it. While I am standing, I look around and no one seems to be holding a book.

I felt bad, because as everyone was singing "Amazing grace" I sort of just moved my mouth and said amazing grace how sweet thou are, blah blah blah blah blah blah.

Anyways, I thought I would add a reason why I ask. Thanks.

We are Baptist. We stand for some songs and sit for others. If we are singing a lot of songs in a row it is hard for many of the older folks to stand for so long- so we'll sit. SOme songs require a lot of air-so we'll stand for those.

My voice has been known to scare small children it's so bad, so If I am standing near a visitor- I'll sing softley to make the church going experience as positive for them as possible. If they heard my voice they would run screaming from the church.

I think one reason we mormons stay seated is so that it doesnt interrupt the spirit of the meeting. It is very distracting to get up and sit down. The meeting is suppose to stay as reverant as possible. We also dont use guitars or drums or any instruments like that. Just pretty much the piano and organ, occasionally someone will play the violin or flute. All music is suppose to be respectful and more twds the peaceful nature. No christian rock would ever be played during a meeting.

A lot of people just sort of move their mouth, lol. You are not alone.

In some wards they will stand for the song in between speakers to let people sort of stretch a bit, but most wards have stopped doing that as well.

Mormons sit most of the time during hymns.

Every once in a while congregations will stand, but that is rare and there isn't any rhyme or reason to it. Probably because the chorister felt like people needed a stretch.

I think it varies. I am LDS and sometimes we stand for a hymn in the middle of our meeting. Like someone else said, it gets people up to stretch. It also seems like more people sing when we stand. I don't know why.

At my church we usually stand to sing the first and last songs but sit while singing the others.

I think it is just different customs at different churches. I haven't ever heard anyone give a doctrinal reason for it.

Jehovah's Witnesses stand when singing, but it is not compulsory.

Standing helps one to sing better, that's all.
