TomTom don't update very often. A recently bought unit should have the latest maps as TT have recently updated. Unfortunately the updates are not free and cost around £80 so if you are buying make sure it has the latest version. There is now also the "Mapshare" feature that allows you to make limited corrections to your maps and upload hem for other users. Only on some units though.

The signal that operates it from the Satellites is updated every few seconds or faster.

The "Map" that you see is downloaded and updated from the Internet when you get around to plugging it into the computer and Internet.

Garmin Zumo has continuing update facilities so check one out and see if it fits your bill. Mines 10 years old and I update it once a year for free.

Reguallay, you can sign up to "user map changes," you plug that into your pc, and It downloads the latest map corrections :D
