The best definition of an alcohilic is: "someone who wants to quit drinking". Everytime I read this, I realise how much there is in that statement.
of course, there is AA- great program, but some are put off by the religious aspect. But, there are now LOTS of non-religious alcohol rehabilitation programs- if you feel this is something to explore, start NOW. I realised that for me, there was always a 'reason' to drink, like 'I'll quit after this weekedn, or after my birthday, or Xmas, or whatever.' BULL!! That's rationalisation. The answer is to stop NOW. This decision can only come from within your being, not from reading statistics or medical reports, etc.
there is a great quotation from Confucious:
"first, the man takes a drink.
Then, the drink takes a drink.
Then, the drink takes the man..."

I found for myself, after hitting bottom in many ways, that I was allowing alcohol to steal my joy. It was drowning the beauty of who I really am, as a person experiencing life and time. It was killing my potential. I started looking at the people around me in bars, or famous people I loved who had died from drinking (like John Bonham...) and realised I did not want be one of them. Just because drinking is so encouraged in our culture, does not mean it is a normal activity. I am FAR happier, healthier, productive, and wealthier in every way since I had the last drink of my life, nearly five years ago.
Oh, and in case you are worried about pressure or temptation, remember that once you have really made the decision within yourself, that you are sick and tired of being sick and tired, you will never feel tempted. I know, because I am also a bartender.

Well realizing it is the first step, so good for you.

There are plenty of support groups you could participate in. If you have someone you can rely on talk to them about it. Possibly consider seeing a councilor about it.

There is really so much help for alcoholics out there, and as long as you are willing and wanting it, you can get past this.

I myself am an addict.Addicts like me need a certain amount of drugs or alcohol to be sane or sober.Depression hits people everyday. It's all just chemicals in the brain. What you need to do is get in a program like aa.Then see a doctor about your issues.A psychiatyrist might help too.If you can't go through the day without whiskey and self-pity get some help before your life turns into your death.

There should be services you can go to for help in your comunity - even try googling them in your area. Drinking will not help your depression - in fact alcohol is a depressant and will make your symptoms of depression WORSE. I know this from experience. You are also causing damage to your body - especially your brain, and liver. Please get help.

Please check yourself into rehab. You can have a better life. Perhaps you can talk to a family member or trusted friend and ask that person to help you get the help you need. I think it's great that you've recognized that you have a problem and I wish you much happiness.
