I know rabies is usually transmitted through bites and stuff. But what if you were bitten by a dog and it didn't break your skin? Can it still be transmitted? Because i was bitten by my friends puppy and he had very sharp teeth, and i didnt see any break in my skin but when i started to pick at it alot it started to turn red and then now its like purple, it looks like a bruise on my foot, should it be looking like that? The puppy was really small and young, and he did have small sharp teeth. But if it did break my skin shouldnt it be bleeding no matter how small the bite? Should i be worrying?

Puppies usually dont recieve their shots right away. However, the likelihood is very unlikely that you will get rabies.

One question I might ask you to think about is the time limit... How many days ago was it that you were bitten?

If It has been more than 10 days and your friends puppy is fine then worry no more. It would show signs within 10 days if it were rabid.

My main concern right now is that you said you were picking at it and now its red. Many animals carry staff infection in their mouths and it would be more likely to get staff from the puppy bite than rabies.

If you start showing signs of any infection please seek medical attention.

I recently had a cat bit and had to take rabies shots... Believe me you do not want this if you dont have to have them.

You mentioned a bruised area around the bite. If the tooth punctured the skin its possible that this may be causing the bruise around the pucture mark. I know in my bite all 4 puncture wounds bruised significantly.

If youd like heres the link to my article and you can read about my experience and see my wicked puncture bites. Everyone says they look like double vampire bites lol

Hope this helps you out and watch that bite for infection!

you worry too much. i can't say puppies don't have rabies but the chance is very very low. you stand a higher chance of being attacked by a rabid bat while typing your question here than getting rabies from a puppy nip. now stop picking at your bite. that's what's made it red. picking at it only makes it worse. if no skin was broken you're probably safe. paranoid but safe. as you can see from the bruise on your foot skin does not have to be broken for bleeding to occur. when pressure is applied to the skin small capilaries of blood break under the skin. that is what a bruise is simply blood that has leaked out under the skin. it will be reabsorbed by your body and you'll live to worry another day.

Please do not worry. Puppies explore the world with their mouths. All puppies play bite until they are trained not to. The chance of this puppy having rabies is slim to none! The fact that the skin was not broken means that you honestly have nothing to worry about. You are simply getting a bruise from a puppy that was being a bit too rough. Instead of freaking out about this, suggest your friend take the puppy to obedience classes. They don't just train the basic commands, they also teach solutions to all other typical puppy issues.

The likelihood is so remote that it's hardly worth worrying about. Puppies chew everything, including people. It's part of the process of exploration and teething, just like a baby with its teething ring. You would know immediately if the puppy was rabid, I would have thought. There is more than one type of rabies. However, if you feel really concerned, you can be tested. But don't worry - I can virtually promise you you're not about to start barking or lifting your leg against the nearest tree. Good luck.

Rabies is transmitted through your blood stream. Unless the bite broke the skin you shouldn't have any danger of contracting the disease. The bite may well have bruised your foot, thus the discoloration around the bite area. I would say it's nothing to worry about, but if your in doubt about it at all then schedule an appointment with your doctor right away.

I think the skin has to actually be broken.. or infected saliva/blood has to come in contact with mucous membranes. I could be wrong on the mucous membranes part tho.. but alot of blood born pathogens are easily spread that way as well.

There is some bleeding under your skin.. that is what a bruise is... but the skin was not broken and that would have protected you from anything entering the blood stream.

Its not likely that a puppy has rabies anyways. So I wouldnt worry.

The dog probably just bruised the skin. If the dog doesn't have rabies then you can't get it and you would know if the dog had rabies. But just to give you a peace of mind ask your friend if the dog had its scheduled rabies shot and if you don't want to ask the dog should have a tag on saying it had the shot.

Did you ask your friend if his puppy's had his shots? Usually puppies don't have rabies. I think you've been picking it and it has gotten infected. Try some hydrogen peroxide and neosporin. Stop picking it or you'll get impetigo. If you don't have streaks or runners, you should be fine. Sounds like a bruise. Yes, puppy teeth are very sharp. They are babies and just like human babies love to "mouth" everything and everyone.

I would have said maybe, but the other
day I heard they were looking for some
kittens given away at a store by someone.
The mother cat, and one of the
kittens were found to have rabies.
They had no idea who took the kittens
home with them.

All marks we get don't bleed.
You can get Rabies from saliva on
an open wound.

You were picking at it for some reason.
It sounds infected.
Tell your Parents right away.
RIGHT AWAY.
