I have a russian 1955 sks the cleaning rod looks like it just sits there should there be some thing that holds on to the rod or does it just sit there?

Yes, it just sits there, you unscrew it and use it to clean the bore..... but all those cleaning rods are always missing a T handle...... they never have the T handle.... just the rod.... I guess the Russians just figrues you just punch the bore with a straight rod.... with the M16 we use the T handle attachment.
I have a Russian SKS also....

the rod is normally held in place by pressure applied along it's length where it goes into the stock. If it gets so loose that it moves out when you fire it, you can cheat a little and put a slight long radius bend in it.
