Generally, information for the senses is routed through a thalamus. If a person suddenly lost the ability to detect odors, why would it be safe to assume this had nothing directly to do with the thalamus?

If there was sufficient pathology in the thalamus to stop you smelling you would lose many and significant other important things of far more consequence.......

It could be the olfactory bulbs themselves. The causes of ANOSMIA are several to many.
