When the time is now, you are living in the present...your actions, your deeds of this moment are your choice. When the day is past, and it is tomorrow, today's actions and deeds are done. You cannot go back and change them.
I think the message is that we need to realize how precious our time is being spent while we are spending it. Consider our choices, our actions, carefully. Cherish each moment, make the most of it. Try to make choices we can live with, for tomorrow those deeds, those decisions (or mistakes) we cannot undo.
But remember, too, that tomorrow is a new day, and there is always (at least as long as we're alive) a chance, an opportunity to make better choices for ourselves, for our lives. But we must live with the past, as well. So it is wise to think of this in the moment we are in: the here and now.
