Jail time. And I would add for the brilliant person who said "going to Canada" that we have, among other things, a universal health care system which millions of americans would indeed die for.

No castration. But since we are a war, anything up to and including hanging. The last deserter to be hanged was in World War 2, his name was Pvt. Eddie Slovak.

Well, if you leave and come back within 30 days, you get busted down, brig time, and other than honerable. >30 days, jail time, dishonerable, dropped to the lowest enlisted rank, and yes, in times of war, the death penalty i.e. the firing squad. It hasn't happened, but under UCMJ law, it could

Desertion is still punishable by death in time of war. However usually you will go to Leavenworth for an extended vacation.

There is no death penality, or castration.....Yes,Jail time, and not in a city jail... The military's jail... Also, dishonorable discharge.. Its SUPER hard to find a decent job with that on your record.
