I want to buy some books for my 4 year old niece. Does anyone have any suggestions for some fun and/or educational books for a girl that age? Thanks in advance.

Any of the books listed in "Honey for a Child's Heart" by Gladys Hunt are excellent. Also any of the books listed in the book "Five In A Row" (I don't know the author offhand) would begood for your niece. There are also activities based on each book for math, science, the arts, reading and history-hence the title of the book. (Most bookstores have it but you may have ask where their home schooling books are kept. A lot of families use it as a cirricula for 3-5 year olds.)
I hope this helps you find the right book for your neice.

I agree with whoever mentioned Ian Falconer's Olivia series. Those books are fun and silly and I know tons of little girls who adore those books.
Ten Apples Up On Top is another one of my favorites. It's by Dr. Suess but the pen name on the book is Theo LeSieg. It's a silly story that involves counting and lots of repition, perfect for a preschool age child.
There are so many books out there for kids and you really have endless options. I would just suggest going to Barnes and Nobles or another book store with a wide variety of children's books and browse around and see what strikes you. The most important thing is that the book is age appropriate, content appropriate, and on a topic that your niece woud enjoy. Make sure you read the book completely before you buy it to make sure there is nothing in there that you don't want her to read. I have seen parents buy books for their children before and later be stunned by the questions that arise from the book because they didn't know that a certain topic was in the book and they weren't ready to answer the questions yet that their children had. As long as you are sure that it is fun and appropriate, you should be just fine.
Good luck! Hope you find something good!

I have a 3 year old daughter and we really love ...

The Olivia Series by Ian Falconer
Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse (and other Lilly books)
Angelina Ballerina books

These are all sweet girl stories appropriate for preschoolers. If you want something more gender neutral check out these (I have a son also)

Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak
One File Day by Nonny Hogrogian
The Peace Book by Todd Parr

Both my kids loved all these stories. OR if you are feeling generous, this treasury is a wonderful collection of children's stories at many levels. The easiest stories are great for beginning readers too.

Good luck

There are sooo many. My three year old dd and I recently enjoyed:
"How Artists See" series which are fun art books with encourage touching the pictures and really looking a details.
"Random House Book of Poetry" has lots of great poems by various authors.
"Charlotte's Web" the wonderful classic animal story.
"Chimp Math" a wonderful math and animal story which made her want to tell time.
I could go on and on but it's getting late.

The Junie B. Jones books by B. Park are a hoot! They are geared toward younger readers. They are not educational. However they are so darn funny. I.e: Junie does not have a pet to take to show-and-tell, so she takes a fishstick.
These books are a breath of fresh air from 'learning' books.
They are inexpensive books in paperback-under $3.00 at Wal-Mart.
Read one-you will be hooked.

Anything by David Weisner
or find out her interests and then visit a book store. The salespeople in the children's section should be able to help you pick a good book on that topic.

If you have a good book store near you, visit the children's section and ask the clerk for recommendations. You might also want to visit the children's room in your local library and see what the librarian recommends.

My favorite children's authors are Eric Carle, Robert Munsch, and Dr. Seuss.

for four year olds, it will be good if the stories' values are strong, and the words used are understandably quite vocabulartive for 4 yrs. like another user said, repeitive phrases will do well to help them rmb.

books with picts mainly of contrasting colours will also do good in helping them to recognize items. (i think, its an old saying)

look out for books with monsters and ghosts etc. these usually leave shadows in them so throw them out of your list.

other than that, books meant for K1 or 2 will suit them well too.. but dont overdo it. sometimes letting them have fun while learning is good...

they can interact better with the surroundings

There are so many to choose from. Some of my favorites for this age group are: "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom" (alphabet book) and "Chicka Chicka 1,2,3". Also, any Eric Carle book is great.
