It really isn't the camera that makes pictures look professional, it is the user. A pro can make excellent pictures with the cheapest point and shoot camera within the limitations of the camera. Learn the basics first and choose a camera later to fit your needs.

A good photographer can shoot with an entry level pocket camera and made it looks like a professional job - because professional looking picture is not made by the camera, but by the person behind it. Most of the differences of the good looking photo and average looking is from the "know-how" of the photographer and whether they have a good eye when doing a composition.

A good camera will help you in with flexibility and producing better image in some situation, but in most cases (especially outdoor shoots), the difference from an advanced camera and an entry level camera is insignificant when it was being compared by the casual photographers.

Now that I've said that, I think you'd better off with a camera like the Canon Powershot S5 IS which allows you to experiment with the manual setting and be creative. I believe it was priced for around ~$380.

Other than that, I also think that the Canon Powershot A570 IS will fits you like a glove because of its economical price and its good image reproduction quality.

Both camera mentioned above have Image Stabilization system that will reduce picture blur when you take pictures on low light situation.

To what DODOL said I'll add this: When you get your new camera, before you try to use it, READ & STUDY the Owner's Manual. Your immediate results will be much better and you won't be back in here asking questions like: "HELPPPPPP! All my pictures are blurry or over-exposed or under-exposed. What do I do????" or "I just got my new camera and it takes lousy pictures. Does it need to be serviced?"

Nikon's D40X and Canon's XTi will take pro-quality shots.

However you should check out the online lens reviews to make sure you are getting quality glass.
