I'm leaning towards saying that Jesus (and religion in general) is an easy out to brain lock. Given your hungry mind I'm sure youv'e experienced this - when faced with factual information that undermines an unexamined belief one's mind experiences 'cognitive dissonance' and either needs to change the belief (painful) or explain it way. The concepts of religion that lend it well to the second purpose are justification, condemnation of others, and cute fluffy bunnys.

Are you kidding? Look around you, who hasn't He affected?
He's the Word of God, who created everything. Who came down to 'strike a tent' of human flesh. Anyone who believes in Him is granted eternal life, He's the Son of God, who gave Himself so that we might not perish, but be with Him. He's the Eternal one, the Most High God, the Author and Finisher of Faith, the Bright Morning Star. He's Faithful and True, He is the son of man, and the Son of God, He's the Kinsman Redeemer, who brought the treasure in the field. He's the Great and Almighty, the First and the Last, the Prince of Peace, the Lord of Hosts. He's the Lamb of God, the Suffering Servant, the Lord who Sees Me, the Jehovah God, and the Righteous One. He is worthy, trustworthy, limitless, and Good. He is the Bringer of the Good News, the Good Shepherd, and the Good Man, who has all power and authority in Heaven and Earth. He's the Right hand of the God, who took the keys of Hell, Death, and the Grave. He's the King, the Lord, and the Brother of those who trust in Him. He is the chief cornerstone, the Resurrection and the Life, the Light and the Way.
That's the big freakin' deal!

The big freakin' deal as you call it is that he proclaimed to be the son of G-d. I don't know why that's so monumental, except for the fact that he was able to convince an awful lot of people that he was their saviour and the actual physical son of G-d. Here's the real problem with all that. One of G-d's first commandments stated:
THOU SHALT HAVE NO OTHER G-D'S BEFORE ME.
It didn't say, "thou shalt have no other G-d's before me except for my son which I will send to you and his name is Jesus."
He was really quite clear about all this. There is only ONE
G-d, and as far as Jesus being the son, well, he's right. He IS the son, but so am I, so are you. We on this earth are all
G-d's children.

He permanently changed the course of Western history and established the most widely influential religion the world has ever known.
Other than that, no big deal.

what's the deal with Jesus?
well He was the one who died a death that YOU should be dying...
He got the punch, insults and pain that YOU shoud be experiencing...
He defeated death, grave and hell where YOU will be going IF YOU DON'T RECEIVE HIM...
in short, He made YOUR life comfortable now instead of making it miserable (which I think already is...) because HE LOVED YOU!
that's the big deal about Jesus... don't be caught dead without receiving Him into your heart...

God chose to take human form to teach us directly, then suffer a severe torture death to attempt to convince others that life may be hard, but for most, not THAT hard.
People who were witnesses to it were willing to die rather than deny it, as were those who those who died for this witness. That went on for almost 400 years, when the Roman Emperor realized why these people were willing to die. They could not deny the one true God. He then converted to Christianity, and the martyring of Christians came to a halt. No people in any other faith have ever said, "You can kill me or torture me, but I will not deny my God." Hundreds and hundreds died proclaiming their faith.
Do you know the word "excruciating", as the worst possible pain ? do you know the origin ?
It translates as "out of the cross", meaning like the pain of the torture sequence Christ endured leading to his death. For a nice full description of the whole thing, read the chapter on the Medical Evidence in the book, "The Case For Christ".

I believe there was a man. His name was Jesus. He was kind, many people knew him. And then he died.
End of story. Hate me if you wish, but I don't believe there is that big of a deal about him either.
