This is a marketing term used to make people driving private vehicles feel good about themselves. Especially those expensive technology laden hybrids.
This is just one explanation, I am sure you can come up with many more.

My opinion is that you should respect the planet.
Don't piss in the river if there is a village further down that uses the river as drinking water.
