I've been in Australia for over 20 years - living in three different states - all the cities and states are fantastic, beautiful places to live. The main thing is probably to decide if you want a big city (Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane are all between 3 and 5 million), a smaller city (eg Perth, Adelaide), a regional city (smaller, less facilities), or be really out in the bush somewhere. Well over 80% of the population live very close to the coast.
Email me if you want specific info.

Look at some of the regional centres. I live in Bendigo, which is pretty well provisioned (except for water in this damn droughted country and doctors, but they're fixing that.) It's two hours to Melbourne on the train, where you can get anything you can't up here. We hardly ever go down there though. You can check the weather on google, you can check real estate sites, you can check jobs pages. That'll help narrow things down. Check the train lines too, so you know how connected you'll be. We have a theatre, two cinemas (one shows some art house movies), restaurants (though there aren't many great ones,) we have two libraries, a tafe and a uni. There's a newcomers group, plenty of schools, plenty of community groups to join of all kinds, and a regional ethnic council that helps out with transitions. Though since you are Westerners, that shouldn't be much of a problem for you.
Not specific info, I know, but it should give you some leads to consider :)

Northeastern NSW is a great spot with some reasonable sized towns such as Ballina, Grafton and Lismore (with shops, cinemas, restaurants, hospitals and schools) and lots of small villages close by. It is less than three hours from Brisbane and less than two from the Gold Coast. You get all the pleasures of living in the country with the convenience of modern towns and cities nearby. There are some of the most superb beaches in the country there too. It has to be the best area in Australia, I live there :o)
By the way it always amuses me when Americans try to put down Australians because of the convict past. Before the American Revolution, British convicts were sent to the Americas. It was only when Britain couldn't do that any more that they colonised Australia. The founding fathers of the USA were British convicts or descendents of them. Be proud of your convict ancestry.

First of all, please don't move here if you're only going to bash the beautiful USA. The US doesn't need any ambassadors like you spreading around the world. If your attitude is that bad maybe you're unhappy WHERE in the US you are and you should move to another part of the beautiful U S of A.
First of all, what you have read would be tourism rubbish and doesn't take into account cost of living, unemployment, and other factors like climate, learning to drive on the opposite side of the road, and the cost of moving 10,000 miles away.
It's high, it's hard, and you'd only find yourself in 5 years saying "We want to move with our children out of this god forsaken crap of a country we call Australia."
Learn to live amongst people and you can be happy in any country. If you want to move here, please move out into the bush wehre you can't contaminate others with your narrow, angry thoughts.

you suck you traitor, America is number one, the Aussies are the descendants of a bunch of convicts and their accents are stupid; ALICE SPRINGS is lovely, in the country but still big enough to have the activity of a moderate city, good luck in your treason!
