These passionfruit are of the black variety and we purchased the mulch from a mushroom farm that called it the heavier composted muclh

You don't say what sort of symptoms the vines are exhibiting so this is just a guess ; )

Mushroom compost is quite alkaline, perhaps the plant is suffering from a too high pH? I would suggest removing the mushroom compost from around any affected plants and next time use a different mulch. Bits of plant or manure (not poultry) are more acidic and shouldn't cause the same problem.

It could also be that there is too much compost and it is burning the plant. Perhaps you could put on less, turn it into the soil and do not let it touch the stem of the plant. (leave a 5cm gap)
