It's serious enough. If the anurysem isn't taken cared of ASAP, brain damage or death can result.

An aneurysm in the brain is always serious business, but the sooner it is repaired the more likely your sister is to recover without other problems. She will likely have a great many tests done to determine if this is due to something like high blood pressure or a pre-existing defect, and to see if there are other aneurysms present elsewhere. Since they are able to do the surgery and the aneurysm is still intact- that is it hasn't leaked and caused a stroke, then chances are good she will enjoy a full recovery. Surgery in the brain is never a walk in the park, by any means, but in this case it is more likely to be the best thing for your sister. At least she will be in the hospital, and in surgery when it's taken care of, and that ups the odds of things in her favor considerably. I would say if you could be there for when she wakes up, you would both feel much better. It's serious, yes- but not critical or life-threatening if taken care of quickly.

An aneurysm causing vision problems indicates that an artery has begun to bulge outward in the occipital region of the brain, and its only a matter of time before it bursts. This situation is like disarming a timebomb without knowing when the bomb is going to explode - everything is fine if you act fast enough. You sister is actually very lucky - many people do not have any warning and the first sign of an aneurysm is death. The operation is brain surgery, so it is risky, but the alternative is much worse. Most people recover quite well when the aneurysm occurs in the occipital region (where vision is affected).

My mom had an aneurysm many years ago. It was the first time I was terrified in my life!

Unlike your sister's symptoms, my mom just had a headache. After laying down to take a nap, she got up a short time later, came out of the room and told us that something wasn't right, the headache wasn't normal, and she wanted to go to the hospital. My dad rushed her down, and after several tests, they found she had had a double aneurysm and needed surgery.

Post surgery, she did great. She ended up having to get one vein clipped closed (it's a small vein), and I believe the other was sewn shut or whatever else they did back in those days (it was about 20 years ago).

During the course of her recovery, she had lost feeling in the right side of her body, her fingers and toes are always tingly, and she stutters all the time. But we'd rather have those than the alternative...death.

I'm sure that since your sister caught this early enough, and was smart enough to listen to her body when it was telling her something serious was going on, that she'll be fine. If possible, I suggest going down to visit since you say no other family is in her area.

Quite urgent. You can look online at what an aneurysm is if you haven't already had it explained to you... but it is a medical emergency.

Most commonly, aneurysms occur in the brain or in the aorta. Basically, the blood vessel swells up (due to a multitude of factors, could be plaque, etc)... this puts pressure on the surrounding tissues (sounds like your sisters was in her brain). If the aneurysm bursts it could cause all sorts of complications, or death.

An aneurism is very serious. It's good that they caught it and are doing surgery. Have you notified the rest of your family? See if someone can go down to see her and be with her... she's probably pretty scared.
