Heathen means from the heath or from the hearth. Norse and German pagans where using it for themselves a few hundred years before the Christians sneered it to them.
We didn't them "have" yule...they sort of stole it. LOL But it's ok, they left out the fun parts like the Wild Hunt. So it's still ours really. Christians just took the trees, the wreaths, and leaving cool thiing out. Ok so they stole it, but it's ok.
Being Heathen means you honor the gods of your ancestors who are your ancestors. It means you live your life to the best that you can in honor to pass down your honor, fame and luck to your children and thier children. Heathensim is about home, hearth, family, friends, and the gods. Just about in that order actually. It is a complete and utter way of life. Asatru/Heathenism isn't meant for everyone and we are ok with that. It wasn't ever meant to be a universal religion. No pagan path was. That's a Christian thing.
You don't choose Heathenism, it choose you. Anyone who is called is honored to do so. We do not "serve" our gods, we honor them. If we ever got on our knees to them, we would loose all respect LOL. We are expected to hold our own, answer to ourselves and accept the consequnces of our own actions as they reflect on our honor, and our families honor, and our ancestors honor. (Honor is a big deal if you haven't figured that out hehe)
I've had no coffee yet, so that's the best I can do.
Hail the Gods! Hail the Folk!

The term "pagan" means country folk. I'm not sure of the origin of the term "heathen," but it essentially means non-Christian. They are both used that way by Christians, but pagan has come to mean specifically nature-worshiper, usually polytheistic. I called myself a witch for a long time, but in reality I saw the gods and goddesses as metaphor and archetype, and not literal entities. So now I call myself an atheist. I don't "worship" in the way most people mean that term.

the two Ymmo and Frau summed it up. Recons base thier practices and traditions on what became, what all of us know, not what we predict of. An occasion (no offense to Wiccans) is that if somebody calls quarters that's not recon. Recons will look for advice from eighty books by ability of 60 distinctive folklorist and archeologist, debate it into the floor, come to a end and then do it. Any recon will snort at that for the reason which you freaking know i'm desirable.

lol

yes we graciously allowed the christians to rename our festivals and celebrations, reinvent the reasons for their existence, then they repaid us by spreading rumours of how we were evil baby eating immoral devil worshippers ;)

for those who do not know their history, unlike my fine friend here, christmas was originally our winter solstice. the harvest festival a corruption of our autumn equinox, easter our oestara celebration, may pole dancing/may day our beltane, etc etc

what does it mean to be pagan?
it is different for each of us, that is what is so beautiful. it is not a dogmatic religion. for some it is not a religion at all but they observe certain rituals and celebrations without referring to any gods/goddesses.
it means freedom to live the way you see fit, and in a way which respects others and our Mother Earth.

for a romantic viewpoint, read 'the mists of avalon'. :)

the veil, which we drew across the divide, IS lifting. :D

Speaking specifically to Germanic heathenry, it means to be strong in body, bold in spirit, and generous of heart. It means to speak the truth, to stand firm in loyalty to one's friends and family. It means to live a productive life, filled with deeds worthy of remembrance long after we're gone.
