I've heard all the horror stories, I know it isn't going to be fun, but I just want to know if there is anyone who has experienced basic training recently that could give me some tips.
Are you expected to be able to do all the push ups and running etc or will you get trained for that? Can you bring pics. How soon can you get mail.

Yeah, my recruiter is helping me a bit, but I am having a hard time with the running because I can't run 2 miles now, I don't leave untill Jan 3rd so I have some time. I know they will be making me do push ups just for the heck of it, I just wanted to know what if I can't do them. I can pass with a 50. Any tips on how to run better. Do you think I have enough time to learn?

They are all right, however a female 17-21 has like 18 mins to run and has to do 19 push ups, but trust me, after all the push ups you'll be doing you will be fine, you will make good friends and get through it, I did!!

You should be able to pass a PT test before you get there. It will really be to your benefit. I had wallet photos. Didn't want to chance anything else. You will be able to mail a letter or call usually by the first 72 hours give or take. After that you get mail as soon as people write. When I went thru though if you got more than 4 letters a day you have to do extra push ups.

Just remember that the Drill SGT is going to yell and scream and demand you do things perfect the first time and faster than is humanly possible. You arent expected to complete all of the tasks you are given. You are expected to perform to the best of your ability. They purposely ask for the impossible to stress you out.

Be in good shape but you wont be expected to pass the PT test the first time. To get out of basic, as a female, age 17-21, you will need to be able to do 17 push ups, I think, in 2 minutes. 54 situps in two minutes and a two mile run in about 16-17 minutes I believe.

You can get mail after the first week and you will write a letter to your loved ones within a few days of getting to your unit. You can have a few small pictures but I would wait and have your family send them. You are gonna be moving so fast, packing and unpacking and slinging your bags around they would probably get damaged.

Boxes will be inspected by your drill so make sure your friends and family dont try sneaking you something you arent allowed to have. (smokes, booze, sweets during the first month, porn, civilian clothes, makeup, etc)

I'm not sure about the physical part. I do know that it would be in your best interest to start working on that stuff if you have problems in any aspect. Any recruiter or Armory can help you out. Many recruiters have a group that does PT (physical training) usually made up of soldiers who are considering or already signed up and waiting to be shipped to basic. Talk to your recruiter. You can bring pictures. When my husband went through, we sent him all kinds of pictures of our daughter. Wallets are the best because they are easy to keep on your person. I got a letter from my husband within a week. Phone calls were scarce so we communicated through written letters. Soldiers are encouraged to write home. As soon as people start writing (once you have a permanant address after reception), you will start recieving mail. Good luck. It's tough but you will get through it.

Chick,

Its been a number of year since I went thru Basic training but it hasn't really changes.

Yes, you will do push-ups and you will have to run a minimum of two miles in a designated time period depending on your age group.

Suggest you talk to a recruiter to get the latest info. all recruits are now required to pass a swimming certification test to graduate from basic.

I went 02-03. I couldn't run for crap when I got there, but I passed to graduate. You just have to pass the 1 mile time to go to basic. Push-ups and sit-ups were the same. You can bring pictures that are not pornographic in nature, and when I went through, you could post six on the inside of your wallocker.
