To be frank, I would join the Army if I could get stationed in Japan. What are the odds do you think?

Not very good. You have a wish list of where you want to go but hence the name wish.

Odds arent great but you can talk with a recruiter and see what they can do for you. Okinawa is the where the military base is. If you are trying to get Japan you best bet would most liekly be to join the army and become an MP (Military Police). An Army recruiter will do whatever they can to get you what you want but they arent used car salesmen like the idiot below seems to think. You dont have to "negotiate" anything. You tell them what you want and they will do the best they can. They want you in the Army and the best way to do that is to get you what you want. Good luck.

There are less than 1,300 soldiers stationed in Japan - primarily on Okinawa and at Camp Zama.
The odds aren't all that great - but I ended up there for 4 years, despite the odds.
Lots of logistics positions, some bandsmen, some fuel specialists, some military intell, and a Special Forces unit -- that's about it.

Very slim. There are very few Army units in Japan. No divisions. No brigades. Even the former U.S. Army of the Ryukyu Islands (USARYIS) in Okinawa is down to an Army Garrison. And that island is where 80% of all U.S. forces in Japan are stationed. I did eight years in Japan, so I have more than passing familiarity with it.

If you go to join, they send to a station called MEPS. Before you sign anything, tell them you will only join if Japan is guarenteed in your contract. If they say they can't give it to you, walk out. 99% percent of the time, they will call you back in by the end of the day to tell you that a slot just opened up.
