It could be a broken blood feather, it could be a scratch from something in its cage, it could be a lot of things. Bottom line is, parakeets can bleed to death. Find an emergency vet, but make sure they have experience with birds.

In the interim, place a bit of flour or cornstarch on the wound. A product known as "quickstop" is better, if your niece has any - it is designed to be used on birds to stop bleeding.

Even if the bleeding stops, get the bird to a vet to determine the cause of the bleeding. If it is a broken bloodfeather, the feather needs to be removed, or it will just continue to bleed every time the bird brushes it against the bars of the cage.

Parrots can't caugulate their blood, and therefore they have little ability to generate scabs. You should bring him to a vet as soon as they open.

But until then, Put a SMALL touch of [cooking] flour on the spot that's bleeding to stop the bloodflow so he doesn't loose too much blood. How much is he bleeding?

You can stop the bleeding with white pepper. Pepper's easy to find, and you might have it in your kitchen right now. Just don't let the bird bleed to death overnight. A parakeet doesn't have too much blood. You might need to keep pressure on the wound until it clots. Good luck!

You should call an emergency vet and take the bird. Cough up the money and make your niece feel secure. That's what aunts do. Better than wishing you had when she wakes up to a dead bird and is mad at you and the world.

maybe check for bird mites, i knew a person that had a bird with mites so bad, it would chew them off as much as it could, because it is like fleas to a dog, it itches, Maybe it is picking the spot over and over. If she doesn't have that mite thing that hangs on her cage, i would get one soon.If it were a break or something, it's wing would hang down. So check for the mites first.
