I can't say for sure why some do and some don't, because I really don't know a lot of people who let go. But, in my opinion, I think there are several reasons.
Maybe some had a bad experience, like a loved one dieing, and they wanted some one to blame, or their faith wasn't strong enough to begin with. Or in some cases, maybe they believed the people who told them that God did not exist. And maybe some just decided that the things of the world meant more to them then their faith. But I don't know a whole lot (in my area) that have let go.

The responses to your question are interesting. Some people are equating religion with faith, while others are not. Personally, I don't think that religion is the same as faith. There are those who change their religion, or who decide to to practice their faith without being part of an organized religion who consider themselves deeply faithful. On the other hand, there are people who are active (or inactive) members of a religion who have lost their faith.

Faith, to me, is having a personal relationship with God. It is reciprocal. It is having the ability to do your best with things in your life you can control, but the trust to believe that God will help you with the rest. It is the belief of being loved completely and unconditionally. It is the ability to find the attributes and the beauty of God in other human beings.

It is human nature to react to the pain in our lives and sometimes lose our way. It is God's nature to love us always with patience until we are able to find our way back to him.

I think the purest form of faith is to have love of God and of ourselves and trust that we will understand at the end of our journey.

People who let go, have usually got lost in theirselves and problems they may be going through. Satan fights peoples minds and makes them think things, such as, there's no use God doesn't hear me anymore. There are many different reasons. Satan knows the persons weakest point and tries to cause them to give up. People who are still holding on, are having to go through hard times as well. They also know that God will help them through these trials. There faith is just a little stronger. Going through these trials makes them stronger.

In Matt 13:3a-8 and 18-23, Jesus says,

“Behold, a sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seed fell by the wayside; and the birds came and devoured them. Some fell on stony places, where they did not have much earth; and they immediately sprang up because they had no depth of earth. But when the sun was up they were scorched, and because they had no root they withered away. And some fell among thorns, and the thorns sprang up and choked them. But others fell on good ground and yielded a crop: some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.

“Therefore hear the parable of the sower: When anyone hears the word of the kingdom, and does not understand it, then the wicked one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is he who received seed by the wayside. But he who received the seed on stony places, this is he who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy; yet he has no root in himself, but endures only for a while. For when tribulation or persecution arises because of the word, immediately he stumbles. Now he who received seed among the thorns is he who hears the word, and the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and he becomes unfruitful. But he who received seed on the good ground is he who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and produces: some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.”

So we see that Jesus describes the reasons as:
1) Hearing the word of the kingdom and not understanding it (because they dwell "in the wayside;" i.e., they prefer by choice to live in sin.)
2) A lack of endurance in the face of the inevitable tribulation and trouble that comes to all who follow Jesus - once the initial joy of receiving the word wears off they abandon the word.
3) Living "in the thorns," meaning that a person allows the "cares of this world" and "the deceitfulness of riches" to choke the word.

Well its very hard in rough times to hold on because you feel alone and youlet go of your faith. Other people specially the ones that have bee taught since they were babies to have faith regardless don't let go of it. Part of it is believeing that your God knows why he is doing things which like I said its hard when you are going through a lot of problems

Because some people are spiritually stronger than others. Some are sand, some are a rock; some blow away with the wind, some drift with the tide, others wash away with the rain, and still others are wiped out by the flood or the storms of life. We all have different weaknesses, and the devil will use those weaknesses against whenever he can.

But sometimes people can't let go of their faith because of the following:
1. It gives them incentives to remain.
2. They lack the capacity to let go of it.
3. It gives their life meaning.

If people don't get something form their faith then they tend to let go of it. Why continue on believing if it does nothing for you.

Because God gives to each one a measure of faith... It's up to us if we make somthing of it or throw it away. God want's us to come to Him with our own will. Not by force. Satan tries to make all of us let our faith go. and unfortuneately, some do. It's our job as Christians to make sure that we help our friends through the hard times and witness to them how God has changed our lives.. some may lose their faith, but it doesn't mean their gone for good. ;)
