I always interpreted this as "going for a walk"...when my son and I go for a walk after dinner (for example), where we go isn't the point...the walk itself is an opportunity to take a break from our responsibilities and just enjoy talking to each other.

The Bible says: “Will two walk together unless they have met by appointment?” (Amos 3:3) How does this apply to our walking with God? The Almighty has extended to humans the invitation to walk with him as his approved servants and friends. The individual accepts that invitation or makes an “appointment” to walk with God by seeking to enter into a relationship with him. From then on, in his daily affairs of life, he should conduct himself as if he were in the literal presence of God. He should be found following the Bible’s admonition: “Whether you are eating or drinking or doing anything else, do all things for God’s glory.” In such walking, we need to be modest. This means recognizing the superiority of God’s ways to our own and humbly conforming to these.
By walking with God we can rest assured of his continued guidance and help. We can also look forward to the prospect of walking with him in modesty for all eternity. Truly, walking with God is of the greatest benefit both now and in the future.
Noah walked with God and the end result is that he and his family were preserved when the Flood washed all the wicked people away.

God was always with Noah and Noah loved God and obeyed Him fully. maybe you would also like to walk with God in your everyday life and have your name written in the book of life and this is a serious matter as your eternity could be at stake

Noah walked 'with' God - as in his life was directed by God, his fellowship was with God, he followed (walked with) God. Yes, I bet he stumbled sometimes, but his path was in the direction that God wanted him to go.
His was a more heavenly calling, he didn't follow the ways of man.

God is everywhere at all times. In Psalm 139:7-12 David writes:

"Where can I go from Your Spirit?
Or where can I flee from Your presence?
If I ascend into heaven, You are there;
If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there.
If I take the wings of the morning,
And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,
Even there Your hand shall lead me,
And Your right hand shall hold me.
If I say, “Surely the darkness shall fall on me,”
Even the night shall be light about me;
Indeed, the darkness shall not hide from You,
But the night shines as the day;
The darkness and the light are both alike to You."

So when someone "walks with God," it means that their daily "walk," (i.e., their life) occurs in fellowship with God. What separates us from (i.e., prevents fellowship with ) God? Sin.

Was Noah a sinner? Yes.

So how did Noah, a sinner, walk in fellowship with God? He showed faith that God would save (demonstrated by building the Ark according to the commandment of God) and in "godly fear," obediently did as God commanded. Hebrews 11:7 says, "By faith Noah, being divinely warned of things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, prepared an ark for the saving of his household, by which he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness which is according to faith."

So, as always, we are saved from sin by grace through faith. Noah walked with God because God was willing to overlook His sin because of the great faith Noah had that God would save him and his family. This is precisely the same type and level of faith we must demonstrate if we are to be saved. But rather than the faith to build and enter an ark to avoid the wrath of God, we are to have faith that Jesus is our "ark," that we enter into (more accurately, His Holy Spirit enters into us) and we, like Noah, are saved by grace through faith.

Now Noah couldn't have known specifically about the coming Messiah, but omniscient God, knowing that once the glory of Jesus Christ was revealed to Noah, that he (Noah) would accept Christ as his Lord and Savior, God, sort of "in advance," grants Noah the gift of salvation through Christ's blood so that, once it is shed thousands of years later, Noah has the same salvation as you and I are offered: salvation by the saving power of Christ's blood.

There never was any other way to salvation; there never will be any other way to salvation. Jesus Christ is the only way.
