My friend has very protective parents. She's 19 and although over legal age, still gets her parents permission for everything she does. My fiance and myself are going to Thailand and we want her to come with us and another friend. We're all convinced that her parents wont let her. I understand they want to protect their daughter but she needs to have some freedom and room to make her own choices. We've tried the whole "I'm 19, I'm an adult and I'm old enough", it doesn't work. What can she do and how can I make sure that by trying to help her I'm not hurting her feelings?? The last thing I want to do is upset her.

We're from Australia and the legal age is 18 over here. We're just concerned because now all of us are able to do things and we don't want her to be left behind.

To this Lisa person, no I don't think she likes it I would know this because I have been friends with her for a very long time - I don't know SEVEN years. My parents are careful and considerate and give me great advice but still realise that its important for me to learn things. I'm not butting in but friends try and help each other!

To Trailsend Ranch, You may have a point but she has told me if it were up to her she would go tomorrow and she is trying everything to convince them. I'm not a dense person and I'm pretty close to my friend.

MRS M.... did you ever think that maybe she can't move out. I know she doesn't want to affect the relationship that she has with her parents but I know she doesn't like it. Maybe you should stop jumping to other conclusions and just answer my original question!!!!

Just so you ALL know, she actually asked me to talk to her parents for her. Sounds like she's asking me to 'butt' in?? Is it still wrong even if thats what she wants??

Maybe it's a choice she's actually making herself. Maybe she really likes still being coddled by her parents? She'll grow in her own time. Maybe too, if mommy and daddy have the money..................it's their way of keeping the reins on her. Hell, why not put up with rules as long as you know your pockets will be full someday soon?

I think that you have jumped to a huge conclusion that just because she cannot go to Thailand that she has overprotective parents!
If anything she has a friend that jumps to conclusions....
Why is it so important that YOU interfere with the relationship that she has with her parents?
If she is happy asking them permission, why dont you mind your own business....sounds to me like you are a bit jealous!
Where are your parents....bet they were happy that you left if you were trying to run their lives in the same way you are trying to run your friends....
WOrry about your own life and let her worry about hers.

I think that it is awesome that she RESPECTS her parents and maybe she realizes that having a 'friend' like you is not nearly as important as having the trust and respect of her parents.

Sorry but I have to agree with Lisa ..Butt out and mind your own business .She obviously must NOT have a problem with her parents or she would have moved out ...

As long as she lives in her parents' house, she has to deal with their rules. When she moves out, she is only answerable to herself.
