A dachshund. They are great dogs. Mine loves me to death and follows me everywhere when we are home. She loves to sit in my lap and they can be box trained if you don't want to always have to go outside. They will also let you know when anyone is around. Mine barks anytime someone is fixing to knock on the door and they are known for their big bark, they don't sound yappy like a typical small dog. They come in short, long, and wired hair varieties. Hope this helps.

It would somewhat depend on the age range of the widower. An older adult might prefer a more mature adult dog than a pup that needs training and more active. When choosing a pet any one needs to be realistic about what they like or dislike in a pet, how much time they plan to spend with pet, main reason for getting and financial aspects.
With so many dogs in shelters needing a home it should not be too hard to go and visit and see which dog catches your eye (and heart). See if they will let you spend some time walking the dog and checking each other out. Take your time, ask questions about the dogs, make sure what vetting has been done and any history on dog. But finding the right dog for any person should not be impulsive. There needs to be a mutual interest between dog and person for it to really work out good.
There are way too many breed choices and then there are mutts to make suggestions. Look for local shelters and rescues and start there. You'll know it is the right dog when you meet!! And the staff may know which dogs might be better suited for your individual needs.

How old is the widow? A Cocker Spaniel makes a good companion dog. I would suggest a one year old dog - puppies can be a lot of work.

A chihuahua. They are the best dog for companionship, to cuddle on your lap, to make you feel better when you are feeling low. They don't require a lot of grooming like a long haired breed. I know many older ladies, and couples too who have chihuahuas and they are so happy with their furry companions.

My wife and I have a toy poodle. He's happy going on walks or on car rides--he's happy being at home with us, he seems to be happy at home alone with the cats. He barks when he needs to, but he's not going to threaten anyone with major bodily injury. A great dog, overall, we got him 9 years ago as a puppy, from the local animal shelter.

Poodles are an excellent breed for women who like to pamper thier pooch. They do not shed ( that's why they get those fancy haircuts all the time), they are fairly lightweight, and they are a hardy breed.

Don't get one unless she wants it and if she does bring her along to choose it since it will be her companion.

cockapoo!!!
this breed sheds very little, has a great temperment, and stays fairly small but is big enough to be able to take care of its self!! there is plenty of information on the internet... you may want to try the "continental kennel club" CKC website, they register this breed and probably have good information...
good luck!!
