For a ten year old girl? She likes to play sports, and is somewhat shy and unpretentious. We don't want her going to camp with a bunch of spoiled girls who obsess over expensive clothes and boys, but would like a camp with top-notch facilities. Any suggestions?

Rachel: My daughter's friends go to sleep away camps for the summer, and that's what she wants to do. If she wanted to stay home and keep going to the day camp she's gone to in the past few years, she would certainly be welcome to do that. I went to sleep away camp for 6 summers when I was a kid, and they were some of the best of my life. I hardly felt that my parents were "sending me away."

I went to Camp Lake Hubert for 5 years (1 month at a time) when I was younger. It's in Minnesota. I loved it!!! It has everything!

I know I will get thumbs downs by why do Americans send their kids away? I am not judging but just, why you don't keep your kids at home in the holidays? I guess it is a cultural thing. In Australia kids don't go away to camps for the holidays. They go to school holiday care if parents work but are picked up after work.
Hope you find a good one, I agree...you don't want her with superficial kids.

thanks for answering. It is just so different here. Not even day camps. Though that may be the equivalent of school holiday care. Not sure. Always good to learn about what kids in other countries do. Good luck finding the right one. Have you asked her friends parents which ones they like? Always better to talk to people you trust

4-H is a down to earth club that offers week long or longer summer camps and does't have to be hill billy either. My daughter is in a 4 H clubthat is focused on home (art and crafts and baking) She has gained many great friends. The entire family is comfortable going to her events without being surrounded by snobbish people.
