I think they should try it out and see if they can make it work. It might be better to start from scratch and design the plants to burn the biomass from the start. Since it probably wouldn't burn nearly as cleanly, I suspect it wouldn't be to easy to convert a coal plant. There is a lot of potential with this sort of energy and we obviously can be more energy independent. I don't think we need to rush into it, but a good amount of resources should be put into it to make a reasonable effort to see if it can be economical. I can't help but wonder if panurge simply wants to be down wind from his hemp burning plant.

No, but maybe with relatively small renovations. Now where will you get enough biomass with out causing deforestation or other ecological problems where you remove the biomass from the environment (as in cutting firewood)?

With some renovation they could burn tires or make syn fuel out of tires
