My sister, who is not a Sabbath Keeper, has decided to have her bridal shower on a Saturday afternoon. It is going to be at a restaurant at 1pm. I don't want to break Sabbath, but my sister is 40 years old and has waited a VERY long time to get married and this is important to her. What should I do? Should I go.... but not eat or drink? (not allow anyone to serve me?) Should I not go at all and risk causing a bigger rift in our relationship than there already is? How can I handle this in a way that is both pleasing to God and yet, won't hurt my sisters feelings?

The shower is being paid for by the maid of honor who lives out of State and can only be done on a Saturday. (She is only going to be here for a very short time.) The whole things is catered and paid for already by the maid of honor- I would not be paying for anything even if I decided to eat. Does this make a difference?

The reason I would not eat or drink has nothing to do with not being allowed to do it, it is more because of making someone else work on the Sabbath. If I do not eat or drink, I am not making someone serve me. The "remember the sabbath" commandment says we are not to make our manservant, maidservant, animals, or even the aliens within our gates work on this day. As for the definition of work, I don't include turning on the light etc...and trivial daily activites as work.

Smelly cat 71- DO YOU really think Yahshua has done away with the Sabbath the way Yahweh wanted you to observe it??
No- Yahshua did NOT do away with the Sabbath and how it is to be observed.

YOu think the prophets where wrong???
No- The prophets were not wrong.

DO YOU THINK YAHSHUA REDEEMED YOU from transgressions JUST SO YOU COULD CONTINUE TO TRANSGRESS??
No- I don't believe He redeemed me so I could continue to transgress. :)

Some say that Jesus is our Sabbath. Well, I disagree with that. Where is the verse in the Bible that says that? Jesus is not the Sabbath. He created the Sabbath! There is a difference, a vast difference. "The seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God." And "The Son of man is also Lord of the Sabbath." Ex.20:10; Mark 2:28.

Jesus is not the seventh day of the week, now is He? And the Sabbath is not a work, it is a rest. We are to rest in the merits of the Saviour hour by hour, moment by moment, but the Sabbath is a "day" of rest, the day that the Lord has set apart for a holy purpose. On that day we rest from our physical labors to earn a living but it is not unlawful to care for the needy on that day or to do good.

Someone wrote: You are so focused on the letter of the law you are overlooking the Spirit of the law.

You fulfill the law through love. Do you love your sister? Or is the sabbath more important than showing love now?

Looks like you totally overlooked everything Christ was trying to demonstrate regarding the law and the sabbath.

Either love fulfills the law, or it does not. The Spirit trumps the letter.
********************************************************

I agree with that except to say that it is not true that the Spirit trumps the letter. The Spirit fulfils the letter by love, for "Love is the fulfilment of the law." Romans 13:10. There is nothing wrong with the letter. When we try to fulfil the letter without the love of God in the heart, then we are mere legalists and we become like the Pharisees in the days of Christ, as hard as the stone the letter was engraved upon.

No. As the love of God is shed abroad in your heart by the Holy Spirit it will not be against the law of the Sabbath, which is a part of the law of Love, for you to attend this wedding especially that everything has been taken care of. I believe Jesus would attend as He attended the wedding in Cana. Of course, guided by the Spirit, you will only take part in those activities that will not make you a transgresser of the law.

You have an opportunity to show that the law of God is a transcript of His character of love and that it is not transgressing His law when doing good on the Sabbath.

God bless!

Hon, I admire your steadfastness to the Sabbath. Personally I would go. Since all the food and everything has already been paid for there is no reason not to go. The people who will be serving are obviously not Sabbath keepers. They are there to do their job and only that. The Lord knows your heart and the difficult decision you are making. Don't you think that He would want you to be with your sister so you can repair your relationship?

I don't know if you are a Seventh Day Adventist (I am) or Jewish, but once all preparations are done and paid for a head of time then you can go ahead and eat with everybody else. Remember the servers are not Sabbath keepers. They are just doing their job. I know that's a repeat, but this is something you need to remember about the Sabbath and non-Sabbath keeping peoples.

God Bless.

The Sabbath was made FOR man, not too restrain him as if
in prison. If Jesus can heal on the Sabbath, and if the Disciples can pick corn on the Sabbath, then I don't have a problem with going to a Wedding or doing any of the activities whether chores or for fun on the Sabbath.
Children of God are called to be Holy 24/7/365. Not just on the Sabbath.

dances_w was on the right track, but chose not to explain. I suspect that explanation may be in order.

First, the Decalogue only requires that the Sabbath be kept holy, and that no work be done on that day - at least, by the keepers. Those who choose to work on the Sabbath can hardly be prevented from doing so. In other words, Sabbath servers will be serving on the Sabbath. If your sister rescheduled, someone else would be served at the same time by these very same people. Eating and drinking are, of course, permitted on the Sabbath - only cooking (preparation) is expressly forbidden by scripture. Indeed, I did not know there was a sect so strict as to forbid serving, as even prepared food needs to be served (and the Israelites definitely prepared food on the previous day so that they might eat on the Sabbath).

Second, back to "dances_w"'s comments. The Old Testament adds the following injunctions to the Decalogue: no cooking on the Sabbath, and no lighting of fires. Flipping a light switch initiates the burning of oxygen molecules. Driving a car initiates the burning of gasoline. Both of these are avoided by strict devout Jews. Indeed, often Gentile drivers are hired to transport those unable to travel to synagogue by foot, and elevator boys are necessary during Sabbath in highrises (if highrises must be traveled).

A final note: Jesus and the apostles ate on the Sabbath. The Pharisees, in an attempt to publicly portray Jesus as disobedient to the Law, accused him of reaping when he gathered grain to eat on the Sabbath. His imagined crime was *not* eating, but laboring. Not serving, but working. Naturally, his reaching out to strip grain from a stalk to eat at that moment was no more work than reaching to a plate to pick up a chicken leg and munch on it.

I hope this helps.

I'm puzzled as to why you believe you cannot eat or drink on the Sabbath. I'm also puzzled as to why you feel you CAN drive on the Sabbath if you are strictly observant. And what about the restaurant? Aren't they going to turn some lights on for you, or are you planning to sit in the dark? What about helping to open gifts - are you going to refrain from tearing the paper and cutting the tape? If so, how are you going to help get into the gifts? Are you going to memorize who gave her which gifts, or do you plan to write the information down, in contravention of the Sabbath. In short - I'm not getting a whole lot of coherency/consistency here, to be honest.

Servants who are not keepers of the Sabbath and the arrangements for whom have been made before the Sabbath are not prohibited from serving, btw.

Isa 58:13 If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, [from] doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of Yahweh, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking [thine own] words:
Isa 58:14 Then shalt thou delight thyself in Yahweh; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of Yahweh hath spoken [it].

YOU SAY on "A SATURDAY". Not trying to be offensive, nor ram something down your throat. BUT, If you will read this with an open mind, and consider it, it actually MAY help you out of your situation. The Sabbath of Scripture is not really on a Saturday all the time, NOR Sunday. The Sabbath of Scripture falls on the 8th, 15th, 22nd, or 29th day of the LUNAR MONTH, the calendar of Scripture is lunar based. THEREFORE, the sabbath is actually on various days of the GREGORIAN days of the week. NOW, the sabbaths for this lunar cycle will be falling on what is commonly called Saturday. Next Lunar Cycle they will be on what is commony called Monday if I remember correctly. Last Lunar Cycle Sabbath was on what is commonly called Friday. YOU can find out more information to help you on www.lunarsabbath.org. Sabbath in the Scriptures has over 70 examples were the day of the month is either specifically stated OR you can figure it out by day counts that are shown in the texts. THERE are NO exceptions known to this rule.

SO, perhaps you CAN go to this event on SATURDAY and yet not be breaking sabbath by doing YOUR OWN WAYS. It just depends on the phase of the moon on that day.

Heb 9:15 And for this cause he is the mediator of the new covenant, that by means of death, >>>for the redemption of the transgressions [that were] under the first covenant<<<<, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.
DO YOU really think Yahshua has done away with the Sabbath the way Yahweh wanted you to observe it?? YOu think the prophets where wrong??? DO YOU THINK YAHSHUA REDEEMED YOU from transgressions JUST SO YOU COULD CONTINUE TO TRANSGRESS??

THEN THE ANSWER IS CLEAR.

I guess the question is what you, in your heart, feel is keeping or breaking the Sabbath. If you do not eat at all on Sabbath, than simply do not partake in that. As long as they are not doing anything sinful at the shower, then I do not believe God would have issue with you partaking in this beautiful time with your sister. Marriage is a blessing from God, and I feel it is important for you to be there to enjoy this time with your sister.

I remember a teacher of mine speaking once about a wife not enjoying a camping trip with her husband, after he asked her to go, because she would miss service on Sunday. While our fellowship and service to God is top priority, it does not state that you must attend service each week. She should have submitted to her husband, and enjoyed their time.

Does that make sense? Of course, God will lead you if you pray on it, and I will ask for His guidance to you as well in my prayers.

God bless.

Although we try to avoid doing things like this on the Sabbath I would probably make an exception for close family who were not observant,
