This is my cut and paste answer. The reason for that is because a tech info is a tech info, you can't beat it (sources below).

PS3 will win the console war, no doubt. Xbox 360 and Wii are so weak from technological point of view, that in couple of years they won't be capable of dealing with serious graphics. GTA IV, for instance, isn't even announced for Wii - this toy won't be able to cope with the game's requirements. Xbox 360 is getting GTA IV, however, the game is going to be released on several DVDs - Xbox 360 owners will have to interrupt gaming process and switch discs (Rockstar complained about this issue). Only PS3 will have it on single BD-DVD.

Let's compare PS3 and XBOX 360:

A third of XBOX 360 (33%) are malfunctioning right from the start. PS3 return rate is only around 0.2%. Despite some people say, that new 360 has no breakdown issues - just visit Xbox section of Yahoo answers and see for yourself an amount of complaints.

PS3 has 8 (7+1) kernels in Cell processor, Xbox 360 -only 3.
PS3 uses advanced tech called Blu-Ray, one disc can store up to 54 gb (in the future - up to 200 gb), Xbox 360 - regular dual layer DVD-9 (8.5GB). It's possible to get HD-DVD (max. - 30GB) for 360, but it'll cost you around 180$, in this case Xbox is going to be MUCH more expensive, than PS3.
Calculations per sec - PS3 - 51-billion-dot-product-operati... per second
Xbox 360 - 33.6-billion-dot-product-opera... per second
PS3 has full media support - USBs, built-in 4 slots card reader (except 20GB and 40GB versions), ability to use printer and so on.
Xbox 360 has USBs and only 2 memory slots.
PS3 supports up to 7 Bluetooth Controllers
Xbox 360 - up to 4 Controllers
PS3 - wi-fi included (except 20 gb version)
Xbox 360 - wi-fi will cost you around 100 $

Graphics are stronger in PS3, due to RSX chip, that was developed by Nvidia exclusively for PS3. RSX runs on 550 Mhz. It's difficult to compare their graphics chips, because 360 has a video chip with totally different structure and operating memory is divided differently in both consoles. However, PS3 exclusives look better than 360's exclusives.

PS3 uses technology from AGEIA company. It does to physics of the game same thing GPU (videocard processor) does to graphics. This thing is on sale for PC(special card). The price is around 350$. There is no such thing in 360.

Xbox 360 is widely known for so-called "red ring of death" problem - it gets overheated easily. My PS3 was running for more than 15 hours non-stop with no problems. Sometimes Xbox 360 becomes so overheated, that thermopaste on CPU melts, drips on motherboard and successfully shortcircuits it. That's why in some countries people call Xbox 360 "Coffin 360".

Besides all of this, I've seen disassembled Xbox 360 - regular PC architecture - Billy Gates is an uninventive nerd (as usual).
When I saw disassembled PS3 - it was a surprise - smart architecture, good cooling (don't buy external PS3 coolers - they make everything worse - original system is good), etc.

In 2008 PS3 will get more than 300 games, including Metal Gear Solid 4, The Agent and other great exclusives. Here is the good link to the future PS3 releases. http://ps3.ign.com/index/release.html......

PS3 online is free, Xbox 360 - you have to pay.

There were reports, that 360 scratches discs. No reports on that in PS3.

The funniest thing, that right now there are no games for PS3, that show full potential of the console. Biggest games weigh only 25 GB (Xbox 360 will need more than 3 discs even for those).

On PS3 you can install other OS, such as Linux Yellow Dog, Ubuntu and others. Sony officially lets you do it. There is no such thing in 360.

PS3 HDD can be replaced easily with any 2.5" SATA 5400 RPM HDD (used in laptops). 250 GB will cost you around 170$. In 360 you have to buy exclusive HDD, where 20GB will cost you 100$.

Sony expects PS3 to stay on the market for, at least, 7-10 years. Also Sony reduces price now. There is a cheaper 40GB version of PS3.

Sony constantly upgrades PS3 software (free updates for OS) - you get new functions and improvements.

PS3 controller (sixaxis) has a motion control - you move controller - game responds. Wii has it, Xbox 360 - doesn't. PS3 is getting rumble controller (Dualshock 3) in 1st quarter 2008, Japan gets it in this November.

On PS3 you can help sick people by running Folding Home project. Wii and Xbox 360 didn't even think about it.

New 40GB is 399$ or 399 euro (depends on the region) - it has no backwards compatibility with PS2 games, has 2 USBs instead of 4, no built-in card reader, but it's the same PS3, strong, reliable, less noisy, different cooling system. The price is friendly.

I didn't mention Wii, because it's so weak, no point to talk about it. Leave it for kindergarten and casual games.

I would recommend that you buy the ps3. I just bought a 360 and i already got a problem with the red lights blinking and had to ship it in to get fixed. This seems to be a problem with all Xbox 360s because my friend has already had to send his in for repair twice. The PS3 might cost more but it doesn't have this problem that the 360 does. The other problem with the 360 is that you have to pay for Xbox live while with the ps3, you can go online for free. Now the other thing that you have to decide is what games you prefer. Some games are only available on the 360 like halo and other games made by Microsoft while games made by sony will only be available to the ps3. I guess it usually comes down to the games you like.

You should get a PS3.

Why would you waste your money on that crappy Red Ring of Death Xbox 360 console anyway? The Xbox 360 isn't getting Metal Gear Solid 4, Killzone 2, God of War 3, The Getaway 3, Motorstorm 2, Gran Turismo 5, or Tekken 6. The Xbox 360 doesn't have built in WiFi, it doesn't have a Web Browser, it doesn't support Bluetooth, it doesn't have built in Blu-Ray or any type of HD format built in, it doesn't have the digital camera flash card slots, and most importantly the Xbox 360 isn't reliable.

The only thing the Xbox 360 has going for it right now is overhyped Halo 3, Bioshock and Gears of War.

The PS3 is getting bigger exclusives in 2008 than the Xbox 360 is getting, and there is already some awesome PS3 games to choose from. And the PS3 is getting 2 more big exclusive games before the end of this year: Uncharted Drakes Fortune and Haze.

The Xbox 360 should be used as a footstool not a gaming machine. The PS3 is the top of the line console in this console generation.

Buy a PS3. Bull Goose Loony said everything that needs to be said about why you should. I own a PS3 and I didn't even know some of those things.

My friend owns an Xbox 360. He's had it for a year and it's already broken 3 times. Meanwhile my PS3 is still going strong.

I can honestly tell you, the Xbox 360 is not reliable at all. The Xbox 360 has a 33% failure rate, the PS3's is only around .2%.

Here is why the PS3 is the better choice

*Cell Processor- The cell processor is an extremely powerful micro processor built of 8 processors (SPE's) and one PPE. This processor is built for extreme amounts of processing and is very useful for multi tasking through artificial intelligence, physics, lighting navigation, etc- The xbox 360 has a 3 core processor, which is strong in general processing, albeit not the best for video games.

*RSX GPU- The RSX is a powerful GPU which is specialized to work with the cell processor to render DX10 like graphics by pooling it's RAM.- The xbox 360's GPU can only handle DX-9, while is good in the graphics department, though not the best.

*Blu Ray- The next generation disc medium which can store up to 50GB (100GB in experimental models) The extra space allows game developers to make large responsive environments, complex artificial intelegance, HD video and audio, etc. without compression.- The xbox 360 only uses DVD for games, which can only hold 9GB, which results in short games, aka Halo 3, Bioshock, and gears of war.

*Other operating systems- The ps3 can get different operating systems installed, such as Linux, allowing it to be an alternative computer, and you can install many diferent programs.- The xbox 360 cannot do this

*Web browser- The ps3 has a decent web browser, which you can go to many different web sites with, it does have basic flash updates, but it does need to be improved upon, including in java, though this can be fixed easily via a firmware upgrade. Many popular sites like myspace and youtube are accessable though.- the xbox 360 doesn't have one

*Play TV- Pretty much Tivo for your ps3, a tuner that you can record things with. Though it has only been announced to launch in Europe so far.

*Interchangeable hard drive- This pretty much means you can change the size of your hard drive with any hard drive so you can store more things.- you have to buy an expensive MS HDD for the 360

*Built in wifi- Wifi lets you connect to the internet wirelessly- With the xbox 360 you have to buy a wifi adapter for $100, this comes standard in the PS3.

*Free Online- the xbox 360 costs $50 per year

*Playstation Home- Playstation home is an interactive community of ps3 users where you can play games or meet up with friends and hang out at your virtual home and hang outs, as well as stream live media(releasing in october, and is FREE)

* Games- For now good games include; Heavenly Sword, Resistance Fall of Man, Rainbow Six Vegas, Folklore, warhawk, lair, and motorstorm. Good upcoming games are Ratchet and Clank Future, Call of Duty 4, Haze, Uncharted:Drakes Fortune, Metal Gear Solid 4, Gran Turismo Prologue, Eye of Judgment, LittleBigPlanet, SOCOM confrontation, Tekken 6, Time Crisis 4, White Knight Story, and Final Fantasy XIII. Over 300 games will be released by next spring.

As of right now, I think that a 360 would be better to have, but, probably within a year, the PS3 will turn out to be a better deal.

360 is a must own. It has a 250+ game library, great visuals in almost everyone of them, and possibly the best experience to get out of gaming. Not to mention the 12.95 monthly payment (or other option) for xbox live, the largest online gaming community. Although 360 is know for it's amazing shooter games, it has a wide variety of good genres, including, FPS, RPG, Racing, Sports, action/adventure.
With xbox live gold you can go online in ranked matches and play online and compete in leaderboards and tournaments. Not to mention the friends you make, such as clans and teams.
Also with xbox live you can get access to the XBL Marketplace including downloadable arcade games (100+), HD Movies, music videos, game videos, game and movie trailers, tv shows, and gamerpics and themes to brighten up your xbox and gamercard.
Speaking of a gamercard, it is your own personal name that you choose. This is the best way to play games. If you have an extra 400$ get the black elite 360 but if not get the regular xbox premium.
And to the guy who said that thing about the bugs, many 360 users have stopped experiencing bugs in systems completely since the mid summer, and if you get a certain glitch/bug such as three rings of death your system is backed with a 3 year warranty for free repair.
Do not get a PS3 whatever you do, 50 games at the most, ys the online play is free, but we are talking about a lagfest here. Resistance fall of man has 40 player online multiplayer....you cannot say that isnt laggy without laughing.

I actually own all three next gen systems and i tell you this, i play my 360 at all times and wii a lot too.
I have only played my PS3 twice since i bought it at launch.

If you get a 360 here are the basic games you must pick up with it:

Halo 3
Call of Duty 4: Modern Combat
Forza Motorsport 2
Skate.
Project Gotham Racing 4
Guitar Hero 2 and 3

Enjoy and hope this answer was of good use.

360 please--better games, visuals, microphone to talk with others in Live--Microsoft simply did it better.

My brother waited in line for 2 nights for the PS3 & it was a huge disappointment, the only thing going for it is the built in Blu-Ray DVD player.

To the person that said PS3 has better features than 360--that is totally false, 360 can do anything the PS3 is capable of (including downloading demos, receiving mail, etc.) with the exception of playing Blu-Ray dvds.

You should totally buy an Xbox 360 because it has way more good titles than the PS3.
