The 20GB and 60GB PS3's are the only PS3's that don't have backward compatibility issues. The 20GB and 60GB PS3 can play almost every PS1 and PS2 game ever made because they have the Emotion Engine chip inside them.
The 20GB PS3 was discontinued by Sony a long while ago, and the 60GB PS3 has just recently been discontinued by Sony about 3 months ago. Most stores only carry the 40GB and 80GB PS3's, but to find a 60GB PS3 you might have to find one online, or find a store that still has the 60GB PS3's in stock.
As for the 20GB PS3, most stores don't even carry the 20GB model anymore, but it might be avaliable online somewhere.

ps3 40gb cannot play ps2 games.
ps3 80gb does have backward compatible but they are using software emulation that means you cannot play all ps1 and ps2 games.
ps3 20gb and 60gb has the best backward compatible because they are using the emotion engine that means you can play at least 95% of the games.

The 80GB makes use of application emulation as a replace of hardware emulation like the 60GB does. Consequentially, it really is no longer totally like minded with as many PS2 video games because the 60GB is. There are patches you may receive from Sony for some video games, yet to be consumer-pleasant, you're better off in basic terms playing them on the PS2 as a replace.

US or Japanese 20GB and 60GB are the best (they have two chips from PS2 - Emotion Engine - CPU and Graphics Synthesizer - GPU). That's why almost all PS2 games run. 80GB and european 60GB can play around 80% of games (there is no PS2's CPU, only GPU). 40GB doesn't play old games at all.
