Overall, wild salmon has lower mercury levels than wild tuna, but both types of fish are healthy and can be safely eaten 2-3 times a week. The key word is "wild," as farm raised fish of any type will have a much higher mercury content.

I think that all fish has some mercury, or some kind of contamination. However, with salmon there are two possible kinds you can get. Salmon that grow up on fish farms have more contamination because they are fed fish meal from ocean fish (as I recall) and the pollution from the ocean fish gets concentrated in their bodies. Wild salmon do not get this kind of pollution buildup. All salmon caught in Alaska is wild, so you will be a lot safer with eating Alaska salmon or wild salmon.

1. Mercury levels in fish are only an issue for pregnant women and babies.
2. For the above, the general rule is "big fish, bad fish." Limit to one serving per week.
3. For the rest of us, the mercury levels found in fish are safe. Eat and Enjoy.
