Usually when refering to the orientation of the flag for display it's referenced from the flag's POV. When the flag is displayed on a wall the Union is to the flag's right.
The Union (blue field and stars), however, is presented when on a mobile object, including a person) as though it were carried on a standard and moving forward.
Havng the patch on the right shoulder, with the union to the right, would give the appearance of a flag in retreat.

To appear that it is waving in the wind in battle, like in the old day wars when an actual person carried the flag through a battle field. It used to be a few years ago that the only time you wore a flag on your uniform was when you were deployed, but since now everyone plays a part in the war on terror, even country side, everyone gets to wear it on regular duty uniforms.

simple: if you hang a flag from a flag pole, the stars are ALWAYS closest to the pole. Therefore, when you look at it from the right side, it looks backwards. It is correct.
I spent some time in the Navy, that is how I know this!

Not only in the US but also in our country, the badge flag stays on the right arm.....i have no idea why.... maybe because right is more dominant than left, because right should always be right...right?

I actually looked this one up previously. According to what I read, it is to give the impression that the flag is flowing with the wind as the soldier is moving

The US Flag should always be displayed as if it's flying in a breeze, if it were also displayed on the other side, it would look normal.
