You should look for the pellets. I think a purina brand rat chow. They provide all the nutrients that rats need. You can then add in some fruits, veggies, seeds, and popcorn (plain) for a treat or snack. With rats, there's not much they won't eat, but some things should be avoided. Avoid fatty foods like chocolate and other candy/junk food. Also, oranges. The peel can be dangerous to some rats (I forgot which gender it effects). Orange juice from the store is made with peel and all so if you give them O.J. make sure it is home squeezed.

There are two diets that I HIGHLY reccomend. The first is Oxbow Hay company's Regal Rat pellets. These are the nicest pellets available on the market, no by-products, no dangerous perservatives, and an acceptable protein content. A very nice company overall. The second is a rat diet called "Suebee's Rat diet" this is a diet that you make yourself. It is pretty fun to mix up and is healthier than any of the commercial mixes. It is used by MANY rat owners and the ingredient list explains why certain ingredients were chosen and how much to add. I find one batch of suebees will last me several months at least, depending how many animals I am feeding. The best of both worlds would be to offer both the Regal Rat and the SueBees side by side, to be sure your rat is getting optimum nutrtion. -Neb

Homemade diets are the best, because you can control what they eat! Stay away from any food mix containing the ingredient Ethoxyquin....it's a vitamin perservative that is known to cause tumors in rodents. Below is a link for a mouse diet, but it will work with rats as well. Also there's a link for poisonous foods..Some animals are suceptible to too high % of protein in their diet. Care should be taken when feeding high protein foods. If you see any signs such as hot spots, hairloss, or excess itching, you should cut the % of protein. .....good luck, hope that helps!

My friend has 3 rats that are awesome at the animal shelter that I work at and she does not buy rat food but she makes it herself. She makes big bags of mixed things like cereals, nuts, seeds, raisins, and stuff like that. You can feed them just about anything except citrus fruits. Google what they can and can not eat. Good Luck!!!

The best food for a rat is something called rodent blocks. There is nothing better for rats or mice than rodent block.
