a long time ago, in a land far away, I started playing flute so that I could sit between Tina and Dana. I learned to play clarinet so that I could sit next to Peggy.
In the Army I played flute and piccolo because most people in the Army are guys so there's a shortage of flute players - very fast promotions.
When I went to college to finally get that BA in music, after playing general woodwinds for money for years, I had to pick an instrument. In the sax section were guys. In the clarinet section - well, it wasn't such an appealing idea. But in the flute studio were Alana, Jaclyn, and Laura... 'nuff said.
For 4 years, I was the only guy in a studio of women. It was a lot of fun indeed.
Once you're out of HS nobody thinks anything at all of a guy playing flute. In HS though you might catch some flack. One way to avoid a lot of it is to also play sax and clarinet - that makes you a very valuable musician to jazz bands and pit orchestras (musicals).
Thing is though - if you're going to go against the prevailing gender role in anything, you had better excel at it because people will notice you there.

I highly applaud and respect any guy who learns to play the flute, especially if they get really good at it.
Look at all of the best flute players out there- James Gallway, Trevor Wye, etc....they are all guys. I can't even think of a famous girl flute player off the top of my head.
The best flute player in my area of the country is a guy. He is currently in college, and he has played the flute since he was in second grade. He was going to start in kindergarten, but his hands were too small.
If you are concerned about the "gay" stereotype, try not to worry about it so much. The guy I just referenced isn't gay. I would know, since I've been dating him for over two years.
(We met in band, now THAT'S a lame story!)
I give flute lessons, and I have a student that is a boy. He's in 6th grade, and he's really excited about playing the flute. I think it's really cool when guys are secure enough with themselves to play the flute.
Along with whom I've mentioned, I've also played with a few other guy flute players too. They are certainly out there, and I highly respect them.
If you are interested in playing the flute, than go ahead and play! There will probably be immature people who will make fun of you, but they are just insecure about themselves. In the community of music, you would earn respect.
I think you should do it. That would be really cool. =)
Good luck.

Any guy that is comfortable with himself is cool to me, and someone that says otherwise isn't worth your time.
The idea that male flute players are lame or gay is just plain stupid. Whether a guy is gay or not has nothing to do with what instrument he chooses...A SHORT list of awesome male flute players: James Galway, Goran Marcusson, Jean-Pierre Rampal, Bradley Garner, Willaim Kincaid, Robert Longevins (the principal of the NY Phil), Gary Shocker...I've met some of these guys, and they were all awesome and not lame at all.
For every one of these men, there's a woman who's just as amazing!
The idea that men are naturally better at the flute than women is also stupid...sorry. "Men have more breath support?" ??? That's not true at all. If anything, men may have a slight advantage because they have bigger hands and fingers, which makes holding the flute more comfortable--so they are not as prone to injury. That's pretty much it!

Guys tend to have better breath support for flute, which is why many professionals are men. Yet there are also many women who play flute too - but only those who are good get praised and respected.
I think it's cool for a guy to play flute well, though obviously sometimes girls get competitive. :) We have two guys who play flute in our band: one had a very good tone while the other was pretty bad. If you're a guy who plays flute WELL in band, then the girls will tend to respect you more.
Flutes are sometimes stereotyped as "girly-instruments", yet look at people like James Galway and John-Pierre Rampal! If you're good at anything, then you will get respect for it, no matter which stereotypes are associated with it. :)
Besides, if you're good at something, you're never lame.

Every single one of the best flute players in history are men. Playing the flute can be very aggressive and masculine - in fact, today flutists are going for a very "manly" sound. So you're lucky! I'm a girl and I know that men are better flute players naturally. I have to work harder!
Stick with it - you will be successful!

Yes, it's completely appropriate. James Galway, Jean-Pierre Rampal - both guys. And despite what people say about the flute being one of the easier instruments, it really isn't. All instruments are easy in some aspects and harder in others, so there really isn't a solid base for comparison. Sure, oboes generally tend to be harder and tubas require lots of air, but flutes too have their strong points and weak points. Regardless of the instrument, being skilled at it takes work, no matter how easy people say it is to learn. At first, people will single you out and make fun of you solely because you are a guy and most flutists in band tend to be girls. But if you are good at what you do and love it, people will stop making fun of you. They will grow to respect you and admire you for your skills. Let's face it: Why make fun of someone who contributes so much to band class? On the other hand, if you aren't very good and don't seem to like the instrument very much, the chances of people ridiculing you because of your gender will be greater. Just follow your heart and do what you want to do and don't pay attention to what others say. :)
