I dont believe that they do. The trend is to have kids staying home well into thier 20's. Additionaly I'd say that some of that has to do with the expense of new homes and economic fragility of new jobs and lack of depth of parental support.
I think when kids are discipline problems or families are too large to continue support older siblings they are pushed out of the nest.
I moved out when I was 18 because I dndnt want to be told what to do.

Not all, my parents expected me to be back. Especially since I was living in a dorm and we use to get kicked out for a month to have Christmas Break.
I'm 23 and I just graduated. My parents welcomed me back, b/c I basically can't afford my own place b/c my student loans are through the roof.
They sort of figured that out way back when I was a freshman.

Did you mean why are they anxious when their kids leave home? If so, it is because they are afraid their children are going to get hurt, taken advantage of, make foolish mistakes, etc. , and they won't be there to protect or help.

because its time that their children start to take responsibility for themselves and support themselves. And its been 18 years since they had the house to themselves and hadn't had to think about the kids. They want their children to be successful, but out of the house so they can get back to knowing the person they married.

why shouldn't they be. we are mammals after all. it is normal for mammals to leave their parents' home once they are sufficiently grown. and think about this, it is only the modern world that allows their grown children to live with them. (except of course in those cultures where you marry and live in extended families.) i know i know i am bracing for thumbs down on this one. gees people, does anyone have any common sense anymore?

I would assume it would be so they could be alone but I hope mine stays for long after high school, I guess it depends on the parent.
