When you start looking, you will be tempted by the high mileage, best looking guy cars. Unfortuneately, these cars are sometimes not well taken care of. Imagine yourself stranded on the highway every morning on the way to work. The best deal with be the car someone's grandfather who is going into the nursing home is selling. It will have low miles and probably one or two owners. But it will be american made and unpretty such as a buick century. However, the money you save on repairs will let you save enough to get a new, great car in about 3 years.

$3,000 will get you a car from the early to mid-nineties. I would suggest a Honda Civic or Accord (Secondly Saab and Volvo) because of thier STELLAR reputation for reliability and safety. You can spend that money on your Honda and own it for another 7-10 trouble free years before something major needs taken care of but you would still be back on the road after that for another 7-10 troublefree miles.
Maintenance yes but breakdowns? No. Well outside of a new battery, tires every now and then.. Stuff like that. Yearly wheel alignments, quarterly tire rotations, oil changes every 3,000 miles (6,000-8,000 if you run synthetic) and getting your drive belt changed (supposed to be every 70,000 mi but many people go to 200,000mi and never change it but if it breaks your engine is toast)
Try looking here for a car in your price range. I would help you but I don't know where you live.. LOL

Put in your zip, price range and models you are looking for. A good mileage for the type of car you are looking for is about 90,000-160,000 which is not alot for a Honda but is WAY past replacement for a Ford or GM car but OK for a truck or SUV.

You want as low mileage as you can get, see the service records for the life of the car (make sure they went in for regular oil changes, etc.) ask what the car was used for (cars used in long commutes have worn out engines).
Have it checked by a mechanic before you buy it. Never purchase a used car without that.
As far as make/model, if you go to the library and see Consumers magazine, they rate vehicles. Also, AAA has a great resource for used cars too. Do your homework, don't get taken.

Try one of those police auctions. Also elderly people are some of the best sellers because they take care of their belongings better, so you get a better buy. If not just find something reliable, like a Honda or Toyota. What ever you do don't rush and if you believe in God pray about it before you buy anything.

All things being equal go with a Honda but if price enters into it the Nissan could be the best buy. All three, Honda, Toyota and Nissan are great cars so shop in that order. If U can get a Honda for the same price as a Toyota go with Honda but if you can get the Nissan for less go with the Nissan.

For this amount of money you will most likely find an older model with lots of miles. Look for brands that are known for reliability -- Toyota, Honda etc. Have a mechanic look it over for you before you sign on the dotted line. Good luck!

can i borrow some?
Look for the ads and check out the owner who speak for themselves and listen to what they said.
Are they a real first owner?
Do they take care good of the car maintenance?
are they in hurry to sell it quick or they have drama blues?
all of this signs are your basis of the car performance no matter the mile age. always look for the oil leaks of the car.
i did it and got the car that still run in 209,700miles FORD Taurus GL and the owner was a plane ex pilot.
good luck why worry of the miles if the engine are healthy.?

Ive gotten a 1996 VolksWagon Jetta for $300 and there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. It is like if it were new. Everything is decent about it like the miloeage. So IDK why all these people say you cant get a decent car with $3000. You just have to keep looking untill you see a good deal out there.
