I was wondering. Im currently studying Japanese right now and I wondered if I should learn how to read Hiranga and Katakana while learning how to speak it, or if I should just learn how to speak the language first then learn how to read it.

I think you should start to learn Hiragana and Katakana while learning to speak it. It might take you about a month to learn both if you practice for a few minutes every day. But once you know them you can try writing the words and sentences you know. After a while you will be able to write hiragana pretty much as fast as you write English. And you can focus on vocabulary and such, while practicing written language too. Once you know Hiragana and Katakana well, you could start to teach yourself some Kanji. http://www.kanjisite.com is good. It also has a bit on Hiragana and Katakana.

Hope this is helpful. Good luck. ;)

I suppose it depends on your purposes for learning Japanese. If you need to be able to read it later, start learning the writing system right away, because it is quite complex. If you are mostly focusing on conversational Japanese, then don't worry about the writing system so much. Hiragana and Katakana are not hard to learn, so go ahead.

Well, think about the language you speak now. You learned to speak before you learned how to read or write.

I would start focusing on the spoken language first, then start learning how to become literate in Japanese.

learn to read and speak at the same time. if you do one or the other, it'll be more difficult to pick the other one up when you want to.

It's a difficult language to learn reading-wise, but if you begin to associate sounds with the characters to begin with, you're off to a good start. :)
