The party is actually for the radiotherapy department of a major hospital and the invitation states "after 5" attire. I have been to the venue before and it is a very sophisticated place, but my (slimline) floor length gown would feel a bit over dressed I think. HELP!!! what should I wear???

Black is always appropriate. If you're not comfortable wearing a long dress then it's ok to wear a short elegant dress. Accessories can turn a simple dress into a very elegant, sophisticated wear with some strappy shoes. Hairstyle is also important. Silky pants with shimmery top is also acceptable for after 5 wear along with some strappy shoes and a small elegant handbag.

Wear a colorful vest top, a simple cream/white cardigan, and a floral skirt (but make sure the skirt's colours don't match too well with the top). Wear cute flat shoes with a bow.

After five does not mean floor length gowns. It requires your basic black dress or similar. It does not mean vampy or showy. Something sophisticated would be great.

cocktail dress is good! But i might say something short! (Not too short) A little thight that shows your shape (not too thight!!) Or loose that flows! With some really nice heals! You do want him to be the man of the party!

Cocktail dress to the knees...a little sexy, showing shoulders, but elegant. Not a lot of cleavage or leg. Simplicity and elegance is key.
