You should really invest in a mixer for beating. It will make it so much better. Kitchen-Aid makes a really good one.

I didn't even use a wooden spoon when I used to make cookies. I would use just my largest serving spoon to stir everything. Boy did I get muscles in my right arm!! I could whip up eggs in the butter, sugar mixture great!!

The best best thing you could ever do for yourself if you plan on making lots of cookies over the years, is to buy one of those big mixers that has a stand. I went 54 years stirring either by hand or with a hand mixer. My great-aunt talked my hubby into getting me one for Christmas and it was the best gift I could have been given. Now it takes no time at all to make up the cookie dough. Same with cakes and with making homemade bread for cinnamon rolls.

I did notice, however, the texture of the cookie and cake is different using the machine than when I did it by hand but the flavor is just the same. The batter is somewhat thicker using the machine than when I do it by hand.

I found with a whisk and cookie batter, it just plugs up the whisk because the batter is so thick. It does work great, though for making cakes, whipping eggs, etc. So, if you were to use a whisk for, say, chocolate chip cookies, you would be mashing pretty hard the butter and the sugar, then it would get easy when you add the eggs but once the flour is added it gets REALLY tough to stir - same with the spoon but I think easier with the spoon.

I can't imagine a cookie (other than one based on a meringue) that would require a whisk, but, you can use one to make sure your flour, baking powder, and any spices are mixed together. I do think a whisk is an essential tool for the kitchen, however. Find a commercial restuarant supply store and buy a sturdy whisk, a good set of tongs, an instant-read thermometer, and a cooling rack and you will be set for most needs.

Happy baking!

You should invest in a whisk, although you wont need them for cookies. Whisks are fairly cheap (you can get a good one for $2-5) and are really usefull.

I used a wooden spoon for years before I owned a blender or a wisk. Now I do use the blender or a pastry blender to cut the butter or shortening into the flour. You can just do it the old fashioned way though. Have fun and I hope they turn out yummy.

All you really need is a spoon, a bowl, some measuring spoons, measuring cups and cookie sheets.

You really don't need fancy equipment to make cookies.

a really yummy cookie recipe is on the Arm & Hammer baking soda box. It is simple and easy to do.

A spoon is alright, but if you get a mixer it better be strong enough to mix it. Cookie dough is very thick. My sister used to burn out the mixers all the time.

I say yes. They are only a few dollars.

You don't mix with a whisk. You use it for eggs, cream, salad dressing, things like that, liquids. A fork will not work for that.

But don't use it to mix batter, use the spoon for that.

Happy Cooking

Invest? $5 for a decent wisk is an investment? I'd buy that and a KitchenAid professional 6 quart mixer.

Oh, that's right, I have one.

Clean hand are all you need. I have all the tools one can want in the kitchen. But your hands are still the best tool. I agree with other posters that hand held mixers burn out to fast. If you go that route buy a big stand mixer.
