Check to see if your shoes are worn and need to be replaced; that was the only time I got shin splints, when my shoes were out of mileage. Meantime, ice (10 min on, 10 off, repeat 2x), daily, will reduce inflammation.
Rest - don't run - for a few days. fwiw - you cannot "hurt" yourself - i.e. do permanent damange - by running with shin splints - it's just pretty darn uncomfortable.

The way to correct Shin splints is to strengthen the muscles at the front of the legs. Lie face down in bed with your toes hanging over the edge. Pull your toes upward against the resistance of the mattress. Try to work up to 3 or 4 sets of 5 – 10 reps each. Good Luck

What are you doing to make your shins hurt?
From my personnal experience, the best way to heal your shin splints is to go buy a shoe or cleat, if your playing a sport, that has good support. I also recommend taking ibproferen before your activity. This should limit the pain. After awhile, you should see that they are going away. For me, I get them because i play lacrosse on a crappy field and run indoor sprints. Both of them bother my shins. But yea, keep working through it and they should start going away over a period of a couple of weeks

let me answer with a question. were the, almost, shin splints caused by the same running that you want to pursue to relieve soreness? if so then it will BECOME shin splints. usually caused by running on hard surface with inadequate shoes. running on soft surface will, probably, relieve soreness (the activity will increase blood circulation which will relieve soreness (and heal any injuries)

If you try to run through you eventually build enough endorphin so as not to feel so much pain but you pay for it later. I'm as anxious as you to here what others do as I have been dealing with shin splints since high school

Ice and compression can help. I use BioSkin skin compression sleeves and they help quite a bit. I actually use them all day before my run, then take them off for my run. I'd probably let the shins get a little better before running again though.

okay heres what you do:
take like a bathroom dixie cup adn fill it w/ water and place it in the refridgerator and let it freeze. When its done take it out and rub it up and down your shin it like metls around the shin mucsle and bone. it rly helps trust me it will relieve the pain by x100. you cld also do shin strengthen exercises.
i wld not recommend running on them if they hurt rly bad because they cld turn into stress fractures adn you rly dont want that

Myoflex works really good on chin splints. Also, lots of stretching is good. I wouldn't run through it though. The pain is not worth it and you could really damage something.
