Go for it. Follow your heart. The fact is that a lot of people hate Islam and Muslims in blindness and complete ignorance. Some might rethink their prejudice if they actually met a Muslim. Most reasonable people get a grip. Those who don't are basically hopeless and you're not going to do anything about them anyway.

Please don't let people's fear and lack of understanding sway you in such an important decision. You need to follow your path, and if you feel Islam is the way for you, look into the religion. Find a local Mosque and see if you can talk to the Imam. He'll likely be the best person to guide you. Also, go to your library and do some research. Have you studied the 5 Pillars and do you have a basic understanding of what the Religion involves?
You want to make sure you're making an educated and informed decision, as it's a biggie. :)
Also, if you have particular questions concerning topics, write them down and ask the Imam. Do you want to know about Women's Rights and thier role? What about Marriage, does your prospective spouse have to be a Muslim? What changes in lifestyle may be necessary, regarding employment, diet, attire, etc.
Good luck and I hope you find your path!
ETA: If you're *only* reason for considering converting to appease your boyfriends family, I'd say don't do it. A Religion should reflect your beliefs and your faith, otherwise, it's disingenuine.

Peace and Blessings,
Do your homework before you make a decison of this kind and honesty seek guideance. I am a convert myself and have been for some years now. I had to really do some homework. I went to the Mosque, ask questions, read books, talked to other Muslims as well. You should never be ashamed of what you do. If Jesus to Prophet Muhammad kept the goodness Allah revealed to them, we would all be in trouble. Being Godly is putting the wordly things behind us. Don't worry about what others think or say about how you choose to believe. Just take your time and really consider it. Don't allow anyone to persuade you to do what they think is right. Only you can live for you.

I am pakistani muslim
i would say if you have find out that islam is the true religion of God, then what are you waiting for????? Don't listen to what people say, listen to what your mind says... i repeat ,, mind..not heart,, because feelings are not the safe passage towards the truth... feelings can misguide people,.. feelings can easily be altered by the devil through evil whispers.
secondly,,,,, you shouldn't be ashamed if you are sure of islam. instead, you should be proud that you have find the true path. there is nothing to be ashamed of.......why are you afraid of pakistan??? are you pakistani...... there are muslims living in america, canada,,uk, etc etc.. as you know it is the fastest growing religion of the world.... they are not ashamed of.. why are you???? see all muslims are not the same... you can become a muslim and show to the people by becomnig a good muslim.then tell them, see this is the real islam,,,...not what you hear on bbc or cnn.....
my best wishes for you.

If you want to be a Muslim...look into it. My friend became a Muslim because she thought it was wicked sweet...but about 2 weeks after she said the Washeyedo(not sure how to spell it) she said she didn't like what she was doing and felt it was wrong. She just dropped all religion basically...

Friend, you ned to know some more about islam. visit www.irf.net. Let me tel you a few things now:
Quran speaks about scentific facts, like the earth isround, there is a barrier between seas, etc. This was 1400 years ago, whe there was nothig like science!!
ALlah says "The onyl religion in the sight of God is islam"
There is no contradiction in the Quran. Eevry other religioys scripture has many contradictions.
Life is very short. Take your decision fast. But, also remeber friend, that you wil face God on the Day of Judgment. So, take your decision carefully. All the best!

Peace to a fellow sister,
I hope God will ease the path that lies ahead of you. As a Muslim, I value all that Islam has to offer; not necessarily the propoganda and stereotypes but the true moral guideline. Don't convert for your husband only though; only if you believe in your heart.
Good luck.

As long as you have done your homework, and truly understand what you are getting into, and still want to do it, go for it.
Just remember, once you convert to Islam, it's a lifetime commitment, it's not a club that you can quit when you get tired of it.

Keep in mind a war is going to happen, you will most likely be considered the enemy.
Not saying I'm for a war against Islam I'm just saying I think it will happen.
