14 yo girl stick with a gift card. After all, if you don't really know her that well you don't know if she is goth, preppy, super tomboy or super girlie girl. Traditionally 14 is into clothing and jewelry but without knowing what style she is, you are almost guaranteed to go wrong on clothing and jewelry. Though if you can find out from the parents what video game system they have, a new Wii or PS3 game is another great idea. Or i-accessories for her i-pod. Any of those run about $20-30.
For a woman in your husbands office. She is retiring so she doesn't need anything for the house. Do you know any of her likes and desires? You know how people always say "when I retire we are going to buy and rv and travel" or "finish restoring the antique car"? If you know that dream, get something along that route. Some travel books from Barnes and Nobel's. Lonely Planet (IMHO) is the best, but another great idea are the thinner Top 10 lists. If not, perhaps a gift card for her and her husband to go to dinner one night. You can get 2 books for in the $20 range. The Top 10 ones are about $7 each.

Most 14 year old girls like music, how about a gift certificate for a music store? Or, ask her parents what CD she would like. What about a travel book for the retired person. Or a book on retirement.

For the girl, a computer flashdrive - about 20 bucks.
For the office person - a basket of smellies, or a current novel - can get either for about 20.
